SUPPORT GROUPS AND TREATMENT GROUPS 2
Abstract
This paper accurately describes support groups and treatment groups while comparing them. A
brief history of the Alcoholic Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Al-Anon meetings is
given, as well as an account of what each meeting’s structure and function are. The meetings are
variations from Alcoholic Anonymous, often using the 12 steps as a basis. The exploration of
addiction treatment groups is conducted, giving a brief history and overview of the therapy and
the structure and function of the group. In comparing the two types of groups, it is found that
both have multiple distinct types of groups, and yet one group is more structured in nature, while
the other is more casual.
