FAMILY COUNSELING APPROACH
Abstract
Family counseling represents a significant portion of therapy that is happening, and Cognitive
Behavioral Family Therapy is one of many approaches that counselors employ today. From its
start by such noted individuals as Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis, to its growth and current
implementation by Frank Dattilio and Donald Baucom, Cognitive Behavioral Family Therapy
(CBFT) has proven an effective contributor in the area of marital and couples therapy. CBFT
is one particular approach that integrates well with the Christian worldview, especially in the
context of families and marriage. It is also an ideal partner to use in conjunction with couples
counseling assessments such as the SYMBIS tool.
