Presenting Concern
Gretel was referred to the school counselor’s office. She has been stealing a student’s
lunch box; she was also sent to the principal’s office for many similar offenses. The behavior
seems to have begun when her dad married her stepmom.
Background, Family Information, and Relevant History
Gretel is a 10-year-old Austrian girl who is in the fourth grade. She has one brother, her
fraternal twin Hansel, her father, and a new stepmother. She is curly blond-haired and blue-eyed
and lives in a socioeconomically lower-middle-class neighborhood. Gretel was born in Vienna,
Austria. Her family is a fourth-generation military family. Her father is a skilled carpenter. He
frequently travels across the region for work.
Gretel’s family moved to the U.S. 3 years ago. Gretel’s mother died when she was three
years old, and Gretel and her brother, Hansel, were only allowed to visit her on occasion when
