Abstract
The German-American psychologist Dr. Lewin laid the theoretical groundwork for
treatment groups, who theorized that the group as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
However, the first organization to significantly impact group addiction support or treatment
groups was Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Known for its 12-step treatment plan, AA has helped
countless addicts gain support for their addictions. The 12-step plan has been adopted by
organizations such as Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Al-Anon, and Celebrate Recovery, among
others. Essentially, the person seeking help finds support within the group and a sponsor who
gives more personal attention. These support groups have the same structure and procedure as
AA but are tailored to the specific addiction.

Support Groups and Treatment Groups
Throughout the past few months, I have had the honor to observe the three primary
support and treatment groups. The first meeting I attended was Alcoholics Anonymus (AA);
