Spiritual Discernment is an important aspect to a Christian’s life. For many Christian’s,
understanding God’s will for their life is of upmost importance. Understanding the major
approaches to spiritual discernment plays a key role in helping individuals identify and recognize
their own decision-making process. The article “Discerning Spiritual Discernment: Assessing
Current Approaches for Understanding God’s Will” highlights key approaches to Spiritual
Discernment (Horton, 2009). These approaches include, The Bull’s Eye Approach, The Wisdom
Approach, and The Relationship Formation Approach. Recognizing my own decision influences
when making choices about education, ministry, opportunities, career choices, and other major
decisions is important to understanding my view of God and His will for my life. The purpose of
this paper is to familiarize myself with the various views on vocational decision making and the
approaches to spiritual discernment, as well as help me explore my own approaches to spiritual
discernment by increasing my awareness of how my approach could influence counseling. This
paper discusses my own approach and how I would approach clients who have different views
and beliefs than I.
