Stimulus Questions: Chapter Two Research Training - Joys and Challenges Assignment
1. In what ways do you think scientific thinking might be useful for both practice and
science activities?
Scientific thinking can useful for both practice and science activities because
when a counselor has the foundation of both, they are better prepared for the
counseling field (Heppner et al., 2016, p. 14). In the counseling field, we rely on
our research to help us help our clients and without that scientific research we
would not have the knowledge to work with our clients and have credibility.
2. Identify five activities you can do to incorporate scientific thinking into your counseling
practice?
There are five activities I can do to incorporate scientific thinking into my
counseling practice would be: read research literature, treatment planning,
completing assessments, evidence-based practice, and collaboration with other
professionals.
3. What do you see as the most important advantage of integrating science and practice in
the counseling profession?
I believe the integrating science and practice into the counseling field can be an
advantage because it puts more emphasis on critical thinking (Heppner et al.,
2016, p. 23). This is important because the counselor will then be able to offer the
client the best treatment possible.
4. How do you see yourself in terms of being a researcher and/or practitioner?
In terms of seeing myself as a researcher and/or practitioner, I plan to use the
knowledge from my research to help me to be a better practitioner because with

knowledge I will be able to support the decisions I make when addressing my
clients’ needs.
5. What do you feel very passionate about in your future as a counselor? Can you see any
way that research could help you enhance the work you will do within the areas that
excite you the most?
What I am most passionate about is helping children and adolescents who have
experienced trauma in their lives and how that affects their relationships in
adulthood. I can see research helping to enhance my work by utilizing the studies
that have been done regarding children and adolescents with adverse childhood
experiences (ACE’s).
6. What concerns, obstacles, and fears do you have about scientific training?
Thus far I have had the obstacle of not finding research articles on the topic I
research. I do not have much experience with researching other than one or two
classes I took in undergrad, so I have the fear that research is not one of my
strengths and that when I do find articles, I am not using them as intended to find
everything that I need. I hope that with this class I will take research from a
weakness to a strength.
7. Examine the reactions you listed in question 6; why do you think you have these
reactions?
I think I have these reactions because I have not had much experience with having
a class other than one or two that is solely about research. I have written research
papers before and I find them daunting, so I also believe that I am just not
confident in my research skills.
