FAMILY GENOGRAM PROJECT ASSIGNMENT
Family Genogram Project Assignment
I come from a family of five siblings, with parents who have been together for 37 years.
My mother was a stay-at-home mom, and my dad was the breadwinner. I was the middle child of
five kids. Despite my parents’ strong relationship, divorce has been a frequent theme in my
extended family. When it comes to my two older brothers, they also have stable marriages for
over a decade with children. As for me, I am currently going through a divorce and with my own
marriage ending, I struggle with questions of identity and seek to understand how my family
history, cultural background, and personal experiences cross to shape me as a person. In my
family, socio-political issues may have influenced the dynamic of my family regarding gender
roles and expectations. My mother was a church lady who was devoted to God and always took
care of the home and her kids. She was expected to do all house duties as the women of the home
while my father was the breadwinner who worked daily to maintain us.
This traditional model may have caused me to feel dissatisfied with the dynamics in the
home to which I was expected to follow. My mother used to let my brothers go outside to hang
out, but I was expected to stay home. Due to all the disagreements with my parents, I left home
at an early age and became pregnant at 16. Additionally, while my parents' long-enduring
relationship provides a model of duration, divorce is a recurring theme across generations. This
pattern influenced my understanding of relationships and contributed to my current experience
with divorce and desiring stability in romantic partnerships.
My upbringing in a Jehovah's Witness household exposed me to religious teachings and
values, although my personal relationship with faith has been complicated. While I attended
church with my mom up until I was 12, I later distanced myself from organized religion.

However, recent struggles with faith have sparked a desire to reconnect with my religious roots
and find support during life's challenges.
The genogram analysis reveals intergenerational themes of divorce and relationship
instability, mirroring my own experiences. This pattern highlights the impact of family dynamics
on personal identity and highlights the need for self-reflection and understanding within the
circumstance of one's familial history. The analysis of family dynamics, cultural influences, and
personal experiences provides valuable understandings into my identity formation. By
acknowledging the complications of my family history and cultural background, I was able to
gain a deeper understanding of myself and the factors shaping my worldview. For example, I
recognized the need to work on building healthier relationships and nurturing my spiritual well-
being.
As I embarked on this assignment, I couldn't help but notice a recurring pattern of
divorce spanning across generations within my family history. Despite my parents' enduring
marriage, I witnessed moments of separation and discord throughout their relationship.
Reflecting on my own experiences, I realized that I've navigated through several failed
relationships, each ending without success. It became apparent that I often sought to immediately
replace one relationship with another, a cycle that puzzled both myself and those around me.
Upon reflection, I observed that my tendency to quickly move on from one relationship
to the next may stem from a subconscious desire to copy the stability of my parents' marriage.
Growing up, the idea of breaking up or ending a relationship felt foreign to me, likely influenced
by the seemingly committed union of my parents. Additionally, witnessing my grandparents'
chaotic arguments leading up to their divorce may have subconsciously influenced my own

relationship dynamics, manifesting in patterns of conflict and dispute eventually leading to the
many break ups and my divorce.
Looking ahead, I am keenly aware of the need to address these underlying issues and
cultivate healthier relationships. It's important that I refrain from forcibly trying to mold
relationships into something they are not meant to be, and instead focus on encouraging genuine
connections built on mutual respect and understanding. By acknowledging and confronting these
challenges, I am committed to creating a new path illustrated by authenticity, vulnerability, and
emotional growth.
One significant area in which I recognize the need for improvement to become a better
spouse is in cultivating empathy and restraint in moments of anger or frustration. I acknowledge
that my tendency to react impulsively during conflicts has likely contributed to the breakdown of
past relationships. Moving forward, I aspire to adopt a more thoughtful approach by considering
my spouse's perspective before reacting and striving to communicate in a manner that is
respectful and empathetic. Additionally, I aim to prioritize my partner's emotional well-being by
adhering to the golden rule of treating others as I wish to be treated, refraining from behaviors
that I would find hurtful or disrespectful.
As a parent, I recognize the importance of fostering open communication and
understanding with my children, particularly during their formative adolescent years. I
acknowledge that my tendency to react swiftly and sternly in moments of disagreement may
inadvertently exacerbate conflicts and hinder our ability to connect. To address this, I commit to
actively listening to my children's perspectives before resorting to discipline, allowing for
meaningful dialogue and the opportunity to address underlying issues constructively. By

fostering a supportive and understanding environment, I hope to strengthen our bond and
navigate the challenges of adolescence together.
In my role as a counselor, I am cognizant of the need to maintain objectivity and refrain
from allowing personal biases or beliefs to influence my professional practice. I recognize the
importance of creating a safe and nonjudgmental space for clients to explore their thoughts and
feelings without fear of judgment or imposition of personal values. Moving forward, I pledge to
remain mindful of my own worldview and to approach each counseling session with empathy,
openness, and a commitment to honoring the unique experiences and perspectives of everyone.
Finally, in my spiritual journey, I aspire to deepen my connection with God and cultivate
a godlier person. I acknowledge the transformative power of prayer and scripture in guiding my
path and shaping my personality. By prioritizing regular prayer and spiritual reflection, I seek
clarity and guidance in distinguishing my purpose and navigating life's challenges with faith and
grace. I am committed to embracing my faith journey with humility and openness, allowing
God's love and wisdom to illuminate my path and shape me into a more compassionate person.
As I reflect on my journey, I was able to identify areas for personal growth, including
nurturing stronger relationships, embracing my religious culture, and adopting a sense of
resilience during life's challenges. By acknowledging these areas for improvement, I can create a
pathway towards becoming a better spouse, parent, counselor, and person grounded in my faith.
Through this discovery of personal identity, I confronted difficult truths about my family history
and the complexities of my own experiences. While challenging, this process of self-discovery
offers valuable insights and opportunities for growth. Moving forward, I am striving to navigate
my journey with courage, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose. In conclusion, this
