Counselor Impairment and Wellness Paper 2
Abstract
Most counselors run the risk of burnout, indirect trauma, and mental damage; the American
Counseling Association now acknowledges how these problems influence clients of mental health
professionals as well as themselves. When working with clients experiencing challenging life events,
counselors sometimes feel worn out and their care suffers (ACA, 2021). Persistent exposure to the trauma of
others without the repetition of self-care can provoke these problems and lead to ethical violations and
professional malfunction (ACA, 2021). It is essential for counselors to develop healthy self-care practices
outside of their profession and to prevent bringing their work stress home with them. Practicing healthy habits
such as daily physical activity, a good diet and indulgence in hobbies can help counselors keep a healthy
balance of work and leisure. The importance of resilience correlates positively with compassion, while
contrariwise relates to perceived stress and burnout. Implementing strategies such as mindfulness exercises or
regular supervision sessions can reinforce resilience, allowing counselors to manage stress more effectively.

Professional Counseling and Impairment
Counselors play a vital role in supporting individuals through their challenges.
Counselors may become impaired because of various factors such as chronic stress, emotional
exhaustion, and secondary traumatic stress. Although the pandemic has worsened these issues by
increasing workloads and introducing new challenges such as telehealth adaptations (McKenna,
2024), this situation demands attention. When counselors face these pressures without effective
coping strategies or support systems in place, they may experience burnout. Impairment
symptoms can include fatigue, irritability, decreased job satisfaction, and diminished empathy
towards clients (McKenna, 2024). These symptoms can hinder the counselor's ability to connect
with clients effectively and provide necessary support. This not only compromises their well-
being but also threatens the integrity of the counseling profession. To mitigate burnout and
impairment, it is crucial for counselors to establish a balance between work and home life.
Engaging in self-care practices such as mindfulness techniques has been shown to enhance
wellness and job satisfaction (McKenna, 2024). Fostering resilience through supportive peer
networks can further buffer against stressors encountered during practice, by prioritizing their
mental health alongside that of their clients, counselors can sustain both personal well-being and
professional effectiveness (Haase, 2024).
Counselor impairment is a significant issue within the mental health field, primarily
arising from factors such as chronic stress, burnout, and personal crises. These impairments can
manifest through various symptoms, including emotional exhaustion, reduced empathy, and
substance abuse (Haase, 2024). The demanding nature of counseling work often leads
professionals to neglect their own mental health needs; however, this often results in a decline in
their emotional intelligence. Although this decline impairs their ability to manage both personal

emotions and the emotions of clients effectively, it is important to address the underlying causes
(Haase, 2024). The impact of counselor impairment on practice is profound and impaired
counselors may struggle to provide effective support to clients; this can lead to deteriorating
therapeutic relationships and potentially harmful outcomes for those seeking help (Posluns &
Gall, 2024). When counselors fail to engage in self-care practices similar to maintaining balance
and seeking social support, they risk perpetuating a cycle of burnout that can compromise the
integrity of the counseling profession as a whole (McKenna, 2024). Addressing counselor
impairment through awareness and self-care initiatives is crucial for ensuring practitioner well-
being and client safety.
Ethical Implications of Impairment
Ethical misconduct in counseling is a critical concern that can substantially impact client
welfare and the integrity of the profession. Common ethical violations include breaches of
confidentiality, dual relationships, and conflicts of interest (Walker, 2023). These issues are often
exacerbated by a lack of awareness or adherence to established ethical guidelines. The American
Counseling Association identifies ten pronounced ethical issues, such as informed consent and
multicultural counseling, highlighting the necessity for counselors to remain vigilant in their
practice (George, 2024). In Texas specifically, common ethical violations frequently underscore
the importance of supervisor oversight for Licensed Professional Counselor Associates (LPC
Associates), ensuring that they maintain accurate client records and uphold ethical standards.
Only a small fraction of members have faced official complaints related to these violations,
suggesting that while misconduct exists, it may not be widespread among all practitioners
(McKenna, 2024). For more information on ethical standards in Texas counseling practices,

Maintaining high ethical standards is imperative for protecting clients' rights and fostering trust
within therapeutic relationships.
Impairment Prevention
There are many ways counselors can effectively decrease impairment. Applicable
counseling practice necessitates dedication to ethical standards and self-awareness, particularly
regarding impairment. Counselors, however, can significantly reduce impairment by engaging in
regular self-reflection and seeking supervision or consultation when personal issues arise. This
proactive approach is essential: to maintain professional competence and ensure clients receive
the best possible care (George, 2024). In addition, counselors should be vigilant about
recognizing signs of burnout or emotional distress within themselves. Implementing strategies
such as mindfulness practices, scheduled breaks, and peer support can foster resilience against
the demands of the profession. Some might overlook these methods; they are crucial because
they help maintain a counselor's well-being. Without these practices, counselors may find it
challenging to sustain their professional standards. To safeguard against impairment, observing
to the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics is crucial. The code underscores
core values such as nonmaleficence and beneficence acting in the best interest of the client
(George, 2024). Counselors, therefore, are urged to engage in ongoing professional development;
this enhances their skills and keeps them current with evolving practices. They should establish
clear boundaries between their personal lives and professional responsibilities. Ethical principles
outlined in the ACA Code provide the framework for counselors to navigate challenging
situations while safeguarding both their well-being and that of their clients. Although adherence

to the code is essential, it's also important to remember that it is not just a set of rules, but rather
a guide that helps professionals maintain integrity in their practice. Ethical considerations extend
beyond individual practice; they encompass broader systemic issues as well. Counselors must
critically evaluate tools like mental health-related smartphone apps before integrating them into
practice. By approaching technology with caution and adhering strictly to ethical guidelines set
forth by the ACA, counselors can mitigate risks associated with impairment while fostering a
safe therapeutic environment.
Wellness Assessment
Self-Care Assessment Tool serves as a comprehensive framework for evaluating and
enhancing self-care practices across various domains. Specifically designed to maintain well-
being; this tool emphasizes the importance of self-care in both individual and organizational
contexts. The significant aspect of the tool is its ability to identify strengths, weaknesses, and
barriers within an organization, thus fostering a culture that recognizes self-care as a collective
responsibility. It encourages individuals to engage in holistic practices encompassing physical,
emotional, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of health. Going through the list, I noticed
multiple items that I can start improving on. I just had a doctor’s appointment, and I have to track
my self-care and diet habits for two weeks starting tomorrow. The first on the list is eating
regularly. I am now getting into the habit of keeping records, as I would usually go all day
without eating, working on an empty or low stomach, and then eating later in the day. I am
staying more consistent with this lately. Eating healthy is the next thing I have put on my list to
keep away from bread, fried food, sugar, and dairy. I have tried this for a month before and
noticed a difference in my hormones, mood, and energy and I would like to stay disciplined with

this option as well. Exercise is the one I must improve tremendously. I usually do 15 minutes of
activity daily rather than with dogs or walking now I am aiming for 30 minutes daily. This is the
most important thing to my health outside of healthy foods, especially the older I am getting.
Getting massages is something I am big on; I wish to get more of them but it is costly. I would
like to be able to afford to get a monthly massage as I believe it is essential to improving my
health as well. Dancing, singing, and doing what I love to do I need to indulge in much more. I
do have a healthy habit of engaging monthly but would like to do this daily and maybe even for
my exercise I can dance so it doesn't feel like such a disciplined workout but be fun as well. My
sleep is my third biggest issue. I do not get good sleep a lot of times. I toss and turn most nights,
but I do believe if I start to incorporate the exercises before bed it may help. Those would be my
biggest challenges for physical self-care. For the psychological self-care portion, I noticed I can
improve on writing in my journal more and decrease stress as much as possible. This is not my
strong suit but it is two very important areas I am working on to improve daily.
The emotional self-care portion showed that I need to improve on is allowing myself to
cry more. I have a tendency to just keep going and don’t allow myself to feel sometimes which is
very important. I have a good practice of keeping humor at a place of importance. The spiritual
self-care portion shows I can improve on being more open to not knowing. I'm not big on
surprises and I try to be in control with as much as I can. Realizing control and allowing things to
flow naturally. Last but not least, the workplace self-care portion is a section I severely should
work on. Being a workaholic naturally makes it easier to avoid self while working. I took a lot of
notes from this section as this is probably where I need the most improvement. I would most of
all like to focus on setting limits with clients and colleagues and have a peer support group as
well. I hope to strive for balance in work and home life the best I can move forward.

Personal Wellness Plan
I am willing to keep a daily log for myself to reflect on my progress and to help with staying
consistent with my healthy goals. I recognize the need for healthier diet and increased physical
activity; however, my current eating habits often lean towards convenience rather than
nutritional value, which leads to feelings of lethargy and decreased productivity. As well as my
exercise routine is sporadic at best. I find myself prioritizing academic commitments over
physical well-being, which has resulted in a decline in both mental and physical health. To
address these concerns, I propose several actionable changes. My goal is to aim to establish a
weekly meal plan that emphasizes whole foods while reducing processed items. This will not
only improve my energy levels but also enhance my cognitive function during my studies. By
incorporating regular exercise into my schedule, such as brisk walking or yoga for a longer
duration, will help mitigate stress and improve overall fitness. Although these adjustments may
seem minor, they can have a profound impact on my overall well-being.
To implement these changes successfully, I am willing to allocate specific time blocks in my
weekly calendar dedicated solely to meal preparation and exercise. By treating these activities
with the same importance as academic deadlines, I can foster a more balanced lifestyle that
promotes both personal well-being and academic success.
Conclusion
Having healthy habits outside of work can help promote a vigorous work-life balance
which is needed to prevent burnout for counselors. Indulging in hobbies, reading, exercise, and
laughter can significantly improve counselors' moods and functioning with work and home life.
Self-reflection and journaling are great tools to help counselors stay afloat and ahead of their
daily stressors.
