CULTURAL BACKGROUND
Abstract
One’s culture shapes and molds a person into who they are. Individuals base their identity on
where, who, and what they grew up around. The experiences families endure can be significantly
different than that of your neighbor. Cultural aspects in the home can also be vastly different than
the culture the individual is living in outside of their home. This is why cultural identity can
shape the perspective from which an individual takes on life. In this paper, we will explore my
cultural background being born in Puerto Rico but moving to the United States at an early age.

The culture in which we grow up in shapes who we become as adults. Culture is based on
the “shared values, practices, social norms, and worldviews associated with a particular cultural
group or individual” (Hays & Erford, 2023).
Personally, I come from the Hispanic culture, more specifically, the Puerto Rico culture.
