Abstract
One’s culture of origin significantly shapes how one views life, identity, and the world around
them. The family cultural systems one experiences in the home can often be vastly different from
the culture outside the home. This incongruence can be a struggle when forming a positive
cultural identity. In this paper, I will explore my cultural upbringing and the family systems I
grew up with, examining their impact on my life.

Introduction
Culture is like the air we breathe. It is all around us and breathed in by us every second
of every day. It is vital to human life. Rarely do we think about it, yet without it, we would not
