NEUROSCIENCE IN COUNSELING 2
Although the primary goal of counselors is the guidance of clients to adopt positive
behavior, research and program evaluations are central to counseling. The integration of research
in counseling is significant in continuously demonstrating the potential for counseling to change
lives. Through research, counselors enhance their professional knowledge and thereby improving
the general quality of their service. By undertaking continuous research, counselors have an
opportunity of backing their practice through an evidence base, thereby benefiting clients
through sound practices. Besides, the integration of research into counseling processes provides
the best elements of practice to the benefit of both professionals and clients. According to
Simmons, Lilley, and Kuhnley (2020), evidence-based approaches to counseling improves the
reliability of treatment protocols and clinical experiences and thereby helping clients to attain
positive change.
Still, program evaluations are critical in improving the quality of counseling outcomes
and programs. Through regular evaluations, counselors achieve accountability through
developmental guidance. Inherently, the need for evaluations is based on the determination of the
true values of the counseling programs as well as the associated activities. By undertaking
regular evaluations of counseling programs, counselors can gauge the suitability of such
programs in the future (Houser, 2019). In turn, evaluations help in pointing out potential areas of
improvement through assessments of their effectiveness in meeting the set goals and objectives.
The combination of both research and program evaluations contributes to quantitative
assessments of the value of counseling programs towards the target populations.
The American Counseling Association encourages the conduct of research among
counselors in Section G of its code of ethics. I am particularly interested in section G.2.a of the
code of ethics, which dictates the need for informed consent in research. Inherently, a researcher

must disclose to potential participants about their rights to withdraw from the process at any
given time. Besides, counselors conducting research should provide accurate information about
the purpose and procedure of proposed research studies. Still, Section G.2.d is important as it
encourages the confidentiality of information for participants used in the reproach. Inherently,
the researcher should institute relevant measures to protect the confidentiality of personal
information on participants.
