COMPONENT #1: DEVELOPMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS IN COUNSELING
1) Consider the following case study: Larissa is a 14-year-old born in Mexico but has lived
legally in the United States for the last 5 years. She asked to speak to the school counselor.
She and her parents have been experiencing more conflict lately because she wants to do
more with her friends, especially on weekends, and her parents want her to attend family
functions with them. They say she can have her friends come to her house, but she is
reluctant to invite them because her parents don’t speak much English. She says she wants
to respect her parents but thinks they don’t understand what it is like for her. As the
counselor, what developmental and cultural factors are relevant to this case? How would
you incorporate these factors into your counseling approach with this client?
Based on the information provided in the case study of Larissa, there are several
developmental and cultural factors that one must consider as a school counselor.
Developmentally, Larissa is at the beginning stages of becoming an adolescent, which means
that she is learning how to deal with becoming her own person, seeking independence, and
exploring and pursuing various types of relationships, both friendly and romantically. For
example, In early adolescence, peers play a more critical role for the child, and children at this
stage become more sensitive to the opinions of their peers (Vernon & Shimmel, 2019). Larissa is
