Journal Activity 18
Mediations involve a neutral third party facilitating communication among the conflicting
parties so that they may work out their own equally acceptable agreement. It restores
communication between the parties, allows both sides’ participation, and provides a high
success rate. In this situation, mediation is needed if their mother and Leanne stops
communicating with each other and that they cannot resolve their conflict alone. Being
that Leann is thirteen years old and is living with her mom, her mother can address the
issue according to her rules. However, if the conflict escalates to appoint where their
relationship is visibly altered, mediation will be necessary.
The role of a mediator is to bridge the communication between the conflicting parties.
They create rules on how communication will flow and will keep the focus of the
discussion in alignment to conflict resolution. They need to become unbiased and
suspend their judgement during the mediation process. It is the role of the mediator to
promote a non-threatening environment to be able to persuade the disputants to cooperate
in resolving the issue at hand.
In this situation, the mediator should first bring the mother and Leanne together and
present the rules that will be followed throughout the mediation process. Bother parties
will then be asked to narrate the problem in their own views without being interrupted.
Afterwards, a common ground should be identified to become the basis of agreement.
Once an agreement is reached, the mediation will be over.
Journal Activity 19
1.
a. This person has encountered identity conflict.
b. This stage of development this group is in would be the storming phase
c. Roles have created conflict in this group because the veteran employees are
treating the new employee as a bystander or non-contributor, despite the fact that
the new employee is very eager to contribute.
d. They chose a passive aggressive communication option by going to this boss
instead of communicating their frustration to the team members.
e. The conflict could have been better addresses by adapting the Six Steps to
Effective Communication. The team members could have prepared their approach,
set aside a time and place to address their issues, they could have then had their
interpersonal conflict at the proper time and place to express their concerns,
members should have considered the other groups member’s views concerning
their roles on the team, all party members could have come to some sort of an
agreement on the matter, and lastly, they can follow up on the situation.

1. I have seen task-related conflict contribute to productivity at work when the co-workers
in my unit work together to try and fix an issue. It has been unproductive when each
member has their own agenda.
2. Yes, I have used an avoidance strategy and not always did things work out.
3. A role I have played in a group is the shaper. A shaper pushes the group towards decision
making. I am comfortable with this role because I am not doing all the work nor am I
following the crowd.
4. At work I have seen issues related to diverse members become a conflict in groups and
organizations.
5. I try to balance my school work, job, and personal life by setting aside certain times of
each day to complete each task. I work my job Monday-Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM and I
typically take a couple of hours on downtime before I start on whatever assignments that
are due that week. Weekends differ due to expected and unexpected plans. I avoid or
minimize conflict by having and following that routine.
6. Yes, I have been a victim of a workplace bully. I first responded by avoiding the issue.
No, my efforts were not effective to start with so I had to tell my supervisor the issue and
then I chose to stand up for myself from then on.

1. A human being is a man, woman, or child. We are of the species Homo sapiens. As
anthropology major for undergrad, I learned many theories about where “we” come from.
However, the earliest indication of the Homo sapiens species was in Africa. From a
Biblical standpoint, woman came from the rib of man in the Garden of Eden. Depending
on an individual’s belief system is decides where they believe humans come from.
Journal Activity 23
Thinking about my daily language habits has made me aware that what comes out of my mouth
are not the nicest of things. I say what is on my mind, bluntly without tact, I typically just say
what is on my mind not always aware of my surroundings. However, not everything that I say is
violent. I am a very loving person and my sincerity is sometimes taken for granted thus why I
have turned to speaking my mind. To be completely honest it would take a lot of self-control and
self-reflection to change those habits. If I changed my language habits it would change me as a
person completely. Some may say that I am more pleasant to be around and others may think that
my language habits are fine as is.

1. In the past of the business world the aspects of the “glass ceiling” might have existed.
There used to be a “good ole boys club as well. However, in today’s society, I feel that
women have the same advantages as men do for climbing the ladder of success within the
business organization. From experience, I was interviewed and hired on at a company
where the directors and supervisors are all female. Out of the seventy workers we have
only three are male.
2. Since the increased presence of online communication it has given individuals the
opportunity to exploit others and pretend to be something or someone they truly are not.
An older gentleman has the ability to lie and create an online profile of a younger female
as a means to communicate with younger men/boys. The internet has opened the doors to
the darkest wickedness of men and women’s ungodly desires.
3. There are stereotypes within professional roles. There is in an old saying “in order to
play the part one must look the part” is not just talking about clothes. If an individual is
overweight or has a poor physical appearance they ultimately have a more difficult time
in their professional lives.
4. Currently, there are many Human Resource policies on sexual harassment and what
constitutes sexual harassment in the professional world. These policies often make
individuals concerned and afraid to interact with one another out of fear of getting in
trouble. This is more prevalent with men compared to women.
5. The role for childcare leave is often defined by gender. It is primarily understood that the
female is allowed to take a longer amount of time away from work in order to acclimate
to the new baby being present. However, there are work places depending on the
employer where men have a longer paternity than maternity leave.
6. A leader is someone who takes charge. They do not wait for anyone to instruct them, they
take the lead and are ready for others to follow them. Personally, leadership tends to be
the same amongst men and women. Leadership has changed over the years. Companies
are added extra layers of management to create additional structure
