COMS 101 Section D01
Date Due: 11/21/22
Organization: Topical pattern
Audience analysis: My audience is 3 college-aged men, who are all seniors. They
all go to a Christian school and are all majoring in a form of
business. They will all be graduating this year and going to
work at various places throughout the country and are still
unsure of what they want to do.
Topic: The job of being a detective is an incredible opportunity for
young men and women of God not only are you protecting
others, but you are also bringing those who have done wrong to
justice.
General Goal: To inform the audience about being a detective
Specific Goal: I want to inform my audience about the detective job field and
to show members how this vocation can serve as a platform for
promoting care for others and the seeking of justice according
to scripture. (Psalm 82:3-4, Micah 6:8)
Introduction:
I. Get Attention
When a crime is committed and someone wants justice for that wrong they go
to the police and the one to solve that injustice is a detective. They go out and
investigate the crime in order to bring those responsible to justice and protect
them from further harm
II. Establish Relevance
Becoming a detective does take time and effort but if you are willing to work
hard they do not care about your educational background and you can serve
God by protecting others
III. Establish Credibility
Speaking as a senior in the criminal justice program and having completed
internships in the past and looked at jobs I understand what the field has to
offer.
IV. State the Thesis
COMS 101
Becoming a detective would make an excellent career as you can serve God
by protecting others, bringing those who have done wrong to justice, and
bettering the lives of everyone around you through your conduct.
V. Preview Your Main Points
In this speech, I will inform you about the job of being a detective, showing
you how crime is always a problem in America, describing the specifics of a
detective’s job, and living a life of service to God in the way that he has called
many other people to do.
Transition: Now let’s dive into the specifics.
Body:
I. Main Point 1. Crime is always a problem in America.
A. While crime statistics have fluctuated much throughout the years there is no
cure-all to the problem of criminal activity and there will always be an
opportunity for you to help.
B. Raising crime statistics from the NICR
Transition: Moving onto my second point
II. Main Point 2. The specifics of a detective’s job.
A. A detective is responsible for handling criminal cases where there is no
party who has been caught in the act, evidence must be collected and put
together in order to solve a problem and determine who has broken the law.
B. The types of cases you will investigate could range from a simple home
robbery to a string of murders with only a few clues at each crime scene.
C. Citation from the job description of detective.
Transition: And now onto my final point
III. Main Point 3. God has called us to serve and protect others.
A. God has not just called us to be followers of him but to be servants for
others and what better way to do that than to help others seek justice and
protect people from harm’s way.
B. Psalm 82:3-4, Micah 6:8
C. You can see throughout the Bible and especially in Jesus’ sacrifice there is
no better way to serve od than to lay down your life for him.
Transition: To wrap everything up.

Conclusion:
I. Summarize Your Thesis and Main Points
II. So as you can see by being a detective you will be improving the lives of
those you run into, protecting them from harm, and seeking justice for them,
being a servant as God has commanded us. You have heard some of the things
you will be doing as a detective such as investigating criminals and how
police agencies do not require you to have a criminal justice degree, so why
not take the leap and see where you end up.
III. End with a Clincher
Do you feel called to serve and protect others not just for you but for God as
well? Then you should look no further because as a detective your entire job
would revolve around serving others and keeping them safe.
