Focused deterrence strategies effects on crime: A systematic review
The focused deterrence method is congruent with modern police innovation theory,
which offers techniques that simultaneously concentrate crime prevention initiatives and extend
the most effective enforcement instruments. Focused deterrence interventions are designed to
influence people's criminal conduct by the purposeful deployment of resources from the
community, law enforcement and social service organizations to enable more desired behaviours
(Braga, Weisburd, & Turchan, 2019). These tactics are often presented in the form of problem-
oriented exercises, during which certain recurrent criminal issues are evaluated, and remedies are
highly tailored to the local area's unique requirements and operational capabilities. The ability of
law enforcement to raise the certainty, swiftness, and harshness of punishment in creative new
ways is made
Few active criminals commit most of the crimes. Focused deterrence combines law
enforcement, community engagement, and social assistance to decrease crime (Clark-Moorman,
Rydberg, & McGarrell, 2019). This crime control technique emphasizes the repercussions of
prolonged illegal behaviour and the provision of social assistance to targeted clients. This study
is to explore focused deterrence and to determine how crime reduction outcomes vary by strategy
and assessment approach.
This systematic study by Chis Campbell investigates the impact of concentrated
deterrence on criminal behaviour. The review provides a summary and analysis of the findings
from twenty-four different assessments of focused deterrence interventions. These interventions
include twelve programs targeting gangs that are criminally, nine programs targeting drug
markets, and three targeting high-risk individuals. Most of the studies were carried out in the
U.S, except for one.
The study’s main goal was to compile the existing assessment literature and evaluate the
impact of crime-focused deterrent tactics. Results indicated that one or more notable crime
reduction effects were linked to targeted deterrent tactics in 19 out of 24 analyses of these
methods. According to this analysis, pulling levers-focused deterrence methods have a
statistically significant, overall modest crime reduction impact.
Together with the literature provided, the results of this systemic review, give significant
support for implementing these programs in cities struggling with major crime issues. The fact
that a huge percentage of the program effect sizes that were included in this analysis preferred
treatment over control circumstances is rather remarkable. It is also interesting to observe that
the programs targeted at deterring significant violence that is caused by continuing disputes
between criminally active organizations and gangs were the ones that had the highest effect on
reducing crime. The Committee on Proactive Policing of the National Academies came to a
conclusion that "evaluations of concentrated deterrent programs indicate consistent crime control
effects in lowering gang violence.
Despite there being a robust logic model for forecasting good results in targeted
deterrence programs, our understanding of which of the processes that underlie that model has
the most significant influences on those outcomes limited. Knowing why targeted deterrence
policing is effective relies heavily on understanding the role that deterrence plays in the process.
Despite this, it is especially vital to investigate how procedural fairness and collective
effectiveness aspects impact the program results. In recent years, there has been a rising worry
not only about whether or not police influence crime but also the impact it has on the
community.
