Paper About The Play Disgraced:
"Disgraced" is a play written by Ayad Akhtar that premiered in 2012. The play revolves around
themes of identity, race, religion, and cultural assimilation in contemporary America. The
central character, Amir Kapoor, is a successful Pakistani-American lawyer living in New York
City. As the play unfolds, Amir's perspectives and beliefs are challenged, leading to a series of
intense conflicts among the characters.
Summary: Amir Kapoor is a corporate lawyer who has worked hard to assimilate into
American culture and distance himself from his Muslim heritage. He is married to Emily, a
white artist who is fascinated by Islamic art. Amir's nephew, Abe, is an activist who is
passionate about social justice and Muslim causes.
Amir is asked to provide legal assistance to an imam who is accused of supporting terrorism.
Initially hesitant, Amir takes on the case as a gesture of goodwill, despite his efforts to distance
himself from his Muslim roots. As a result of his involvement in the case, Amir's carefully
constructed world begins to unravel.
The tension raises during a dinner party that Amir and Emily host, inviting Jory, a black
lawyer and colleague of Amir's, and her husband Isaac, a Jewish art curator. Discussions
about art, politics, and religion become increasingly heated, leading to explosive arguments
that expose underlying prejudices and assumptions.
Amir's true feelings and beliefs come to light when he loses his job due to the controversy
surrounding the case. The play concludes with Amir's identity crisis as he confronts his own
heritage and the complexities of cultural and religious identity in modern America.
