Biblical
Worldview
04/21/2019
Crime and criminals are something that societies all over the
world must deal with.
The Bible teaches that crime is caused by evil in man’s hearts.
Christian worldviews can be
difficult to find in the world of criminal justice. When one thinks of
criminal justice one
thinks of evil not Christianity. Crime at its core is about sin and
committing sinful acts. Not
every sin is a crime, but every crime is a sin. Christians who work
in the criminal justice
system are able to use their faith to lead them in a path that is
moral and ethical as they
deal with immoral acts.
The criminal justice system is made up with many different
people from all walks of life
who are tasked with dealing with crime and those who commit
crimes on a daily basis.
When one hears the term criminal justice one does not think of
Christianity or God. People
think of the criminals and the immoral acts carried out by them.
The Christian faith can be
seen in those who carry out their duties with honor and morality.
The articles selected for the assigned literature analysis did not
have a clear biblical
worldview on the selected topic domestic violence. The authors stayed
within the legal and
rehabilitative efforts with regards to domestic violence charges,
and treatment. God and
Christianity were not mentioned in any of the selected articles. The
articles explain how
families are impacted by domestic violence, and talk of punishment
and lengths of
punishment. Christianity and God are overlooked in the articles. A
Christian reading the
articles can easily use their worldviews while reading the articles and
can see as a Christian
how domestic violence impacts them or those they know personally
or on a professional
level.
Domestic violence is an issue that churches are still learning
how to handle. Some
woman are told that it is a sin to leave a spouse who is abusive. Some
view it as a private
matter and are afraid to get involved. This could be the reason articles
about domestic
violence does not have a Christian worldview directly incorporated in
them.
A Christian worldview can be incorporated into domestic
violence in a few different
ways. Church pastors who may suspect domestic violence can have
a more modern
approach to the situation and not convince a victim that it is a sin to
stay with an abuser.
The victim should not be told that they must have done
something to deserve the abuse
which is what some church leaders have said to victims in the past.
Churches can council
the abuser and find them help outside of the church to learn how to
manage anger. Many
women are still afraid to leave an abuser and will not speak of the
abuse. “A cross
denominational study of Christian women who had experienced
domestic violence in their
marriage found that the women felt compelled to present a façade
of the perfect Christian
woman and family in the local church community.” The reason for
this belief was because
of the language of Christianity with overtones of the perfect wife. The
notion of submitting
to your husband is still being preached in the church and many take
this to include putting
up with abuse.
A Christian worldview in the world of criminal justice when dealing
with those charged
and convicted of domestic violence is important. The abuser should
be punished but while
punished should be educated and counseling should be
administered to the abuser. Moral
rehabilitation is a Christian worldview that can be used to help the
abuser.
Burl Cain a
former warden at Angola prison started the concept of moral
rehabilitation.
He allowed
prisoners to participate in faith-based programs as a tool to help
them become better men
and better Christians.
Christians who work with those who abuse can use what is
taught about forgiveness and
redemption in the Bible and use this as a tool when dealing with the
abuser.
