References
This section should be doublespaced and APA compliant. Don’t just guess with APA. Open the
APA 6th edition manual and follow very carefully. Note: even references taken from the library
are not always or APA compliant so you do need to make adjustments. Practice and use your
book and resources!
Read each Tip Carefully
APA 4.15 - Titles of reference section entries need to be in “sentence case”. This means only the
first word, proper nouns like names, and any word after a “colon” in a title will be capitalized.
Example title would be written: Brown, J. (2010). Working for alternatives to the death penalty
(sentence case) NOT Brown, J. (2010). Working For Alternatives To The Death Penalty ( title
case). Can you see the differences here ? Look at the title - one starts every word with a capital
letter - the other does not - as if you are writing a sentence. This is called sentence case Consult

in-apa-style.html
APA 7.02 Book titles in the reference list need to be italicized.
APA 4.21 The names of journal articles and or magazine articles in the reference list need
to be italicized.
In the absence of an author, the title of the work moves to the author spot and is written in
sentence case. See website http://www.apastyle.org/learn/faqs/web-page-no-author.aspx
APA 7.01 Include retrieval DOI for journal articles, when doi is not available, please provide the
URL. Do so for ALL applicable references.
APA 4.08 When you use a direct quote, you must incorporate the actual page number or
paragraph in the citation as well ( Brown, 2012, p. 3); (Brown, 2013, para. 5).
Be sure that you apply appropriate hanging indents to your reference list. More about hanging
indentation view https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/05/
APA 7.01- 7.02 Do not include retrieval dates in the reference list. They are no longer needed
for the APA sixth edition format. Retrieval dates are only needed when website content is subject
to change (i.e Census Bureau will update statistics based on the year and therefore, the website is
subject to change) This is when retrieval dates would be needed. Otherwise, static websites do
