Some of the training tactics I got from my field training officer were learning how to use
discretion as an officer. During this process, I've also learned that I don't always have to arrest
someone who is breaching the law or give someone a ticket. I also need to improve my own
strength so that when I need to use force, I don't overdo it and damage someone. I've also learned
that I must ensure that I have evaluated all of the evidence that has been presented to me or that I
have collected myself before making a final decision on whether to issue the offender a ticket, a
warning, or even an arrest. I believe that using discretion will help to assure the public that
police officers are loyal people who want nothing more than to help protect and serve the
community in the hopes of making it a safer place for them, and that is what they are here for,
not to harass them, as some people say or think about police officers. If police employed this
