Sexual Assault in the United States Armed Forces
Military sexual assault is a widespread problem that raises serious questions about the
morale and wellbeing of service members. The complicated and multifaceted issue of sexual
assault in the military is examined in this research article, along with its ethical and legal aspects,
as well as the psychological effects on survivors and the effect it has on mission readiness.
Fundamental human rights, such as the right to bodily integrity and the right to be free from
harm, are violated by sexual assault (Simons, 2022). Addressing this issue is crucial since the
armed forces have a moral and legal obligation to give their personnel a safe working
environment (Congress Research Service, 2021). Moreover, sexual assault bears psychological
repercussions that extend beyond the immediate shock, resulting to illnesses like as PTSD and
anxiety (Rainn, 2022). Beyond the human suffering, sexual assault impairs military cohesion,
morale, and trust, hence reducing preparedness and effectiveness (Charette et al., 2021). This
paper tries to highlight the cruciality of the problem and the urgent requirement for all-
encompassing intervention.
Argument
This paper conducts a thorough investigation of important aspects in the attempt to
comprehensively address sexual assault inside the armed services. The U.S. Supreme Court's
position and ethical considerations are highlighted as this part looks into the legal and ethical
breaches associated with sexual assault. The consequences of the military failing to uphold its
commitment to provide a secure workplace are then carefully considered. It then looks at the
severe psychological effects that survivors experience and how these affect one’s military
readiness as a whole. It also explains how sexual assault undermines unit morale and cohesion,
3
undermining the basic foundation of military performance. A strong justification for a
comprehensive and broad intervention is made by these points.
Legal and Ethical Violations
Sexual assault in the armed forces is a grave violation of moral and legal principles that
requires prompt and effective action. The important judgement in United States v. Lanier
(Simons, 2022) by the U.S. Supreme Court highlights the importance of this topic within a legal
framework. This ruling is a pillar in the understanding of sexual assault as a violation of
fundamental rights, such as bodily integrity and freedom from injury. It firmly establishes that
sexual assault not only transgresses the 14th Amendment's protection of a recognized right to
bodily integrity, but also the moral bounds of acceptable human behavior (Simons, 2022).
References in religious scriptures often highlight the ethical implications of sexual assault.
Deuteronomy 22:25-29 (Teen Life Application Study Bible, 2012), for instance, highlights that
sexual assault is viewed as a transgression of God's image. This ancient text, rooted in ethical
and moral principles, emphasizes the sanctity of human beings, and condemns actions that defile
the essence of individuals created in the image of the divine. The alignment of legal
jurisprudence and religious ethics in their condemnation of sexual assault amplifies the
significance of this issue.
Obligations of the Armed Forces
The burden of providing a secure and safe working environment for their employees falls
solemnly on the shoulders of the armed forces. This responsibility is a moral and ethical
requirement, not just a matter of protocol (Congress Research Service, 2021). However, when
the military fails to appropriately prevent and respond to sexual assault, they fail not just their
own members but also violate their own code of conduct. This betrayal of trust and responsibility
4
goes well beyond isolated incidents; it undermines the reliability and integrity of the military
institution as a whole. The military, which is frequently referred to as a bulwark of discipline and
order, ought to set the bar for moral excellence. The military institution fails its duties to its
soldiers and society at large by allowing sexual assault to continue within its ranks. The
foundation upon which the entire armed forces stand is tarnished in addition to the immediate
victims. Given these serious ramifications, it is essential for the armed forces to put the security
and welfare of their personnel first. The military must take strict efforts to prevent and handle
sexual assault in a comprehensive manner in order to uphold their moral and ethical
responsibilities.
Spiritual Dimensions
Sexual assault in the armed forces crosses more than just moral and legal lines; it also has
deep spiritual implications. Inappropriate use of the gift of human sexuality, which was designed
to foster closeness but was instead exploited to injure and humiliate others, represents a grave
transgression against the very nature of God's creation. This moral failing echoes the biblical
lessons contained in Genesis 6:1-3 (Teen Life Application Study Bible, 2012). The Bible
describes a sinister period in Genesis 6:1-3 where the "sons of God" had immoral relationships
with human women, which aroused the wrath of God and had disastrous effects. Although there
are many ways to interpret this verse, it reflects a biblical viewpoint that sexual misbehavior
weakens the sacramental ties that bind people together (Teen Life Application Study Bible, 2012).
It shatters the peace and awe that ought to exist among people made in God's image. In essence,
sexual assault is considered a sin against God, as it undermines the purity of His creation—
humans made in His likeness. Recognizing these profoundly spiritual aspects serves as a sharp
reminder of how serious the situation is. It highlights the pressing requirement for moral and
5
ethical uprightness within the armed services, bringing their behavior into line with the
fundamental ideals that support human existence. Upholding these moral principles calls for
more than simply religion; it also calls for honesty, justice, and respect for the intrinsic worth of
every person.
Psychological Consequences
Survivors of sexual assault usually struggle with profound psychological trauma that lasts
for a long time. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and even suicidal
thoughts are disorders that are frequently seen in the wake of such traumatic experiences (Rainn,
2022). The survivors' capacity to adjust and deal with life's obstacles is severely hampered by the
psychological fallout, which emerges as constant feelings of anxiety, tension, and terror (Rainn,
2022). These psychological repercussions, which are far from insignificant, have significant
effects on the readiness and efficiency of military troops. A military that doesn't take care of its
personnel' mental health won't function at its best. The persistent challenges of survivors damage
not only their readiness as individuals but also the morale and unity of their units. In other words,
ignoring the psychological fallout from sexual assault not only prolongs suffering but also erodes
the military's basic competency, compromising mission readiness and overall performance. Not
only is it morally right to address these psychological effects, but doing so is also crucial to
keeping a capable and powerful military force.
Impact on Mission Readiness
Sexual assault within the armed forces inflicts tremendous harm on military cohesion,
morale, and trust, posing a grave threat to mission readiness. Research undertaken at Fort Bliss,
Texas, serves as a clear demonstration of the corrosive impact of sexual harassment and assault
on command environments, limiting productivity (US Military, 2023). The damaging effects of
6
sexual assault on military organizations are a serious concern. According to the US Military
(2023), it undermines these units' cohesiveness, morale, and trust. The preparation and efficacy
are directly impacted by this deterioration. Victims frequently experience severe productivity
barriers, which have an impact on their coworkers and contribute to the overall negative climate
in the workplace. The military's capacity to accomplish its goals is jeopardized when sexual
assault spreads uncontrolled among its members, as this distressing instance reveals. Further
evidence that many tiny units promote poor command conditions is the pervasive frequency of
sexual assault in the military. The Department of Defense is aware that the foundation of unit
cohesion and morale is crucial for upholding discipline, stability, and accomplishing goals
(Charette et al., 2021). This crucial cohesiveness is undercut by sexual assault, which weakens
cooperation and dedication to the cause. Survivors frequently find themselves sidetracked from
their primary duties because they are forced to deal with the complicated effects of their
experiences (Pang et al., 2021). The resulting focus on coping mechanisms instead of mission
objectives not only diminishes the military's combat readiness but also tarnishes its reputation
and trustworthiness.
Conclusion
Conclusively, the thorough investigation of sexual assault in the armed services has
revealed the critical necessity for all-encompassing action. The U.S. Supreme Court's position on
the matter and the moral considerations emphasized in Deuteronomy 22:25–29 served as the
foundation for our research, which started with an acknowledgement of the serious legal and
ethical transgressions that this subject involves. We also examined the military's responsibility to
maintain a secure workplace, highlighting the severe repercussions of failing to fulfill this task.
We then focused on the persistent psychological trauma endured by survivors, highlighting the
7
occurrence of diseases like PTSD, anxiety, and depression. This trauma significantly affects
military readiness, as we've demonstrated. Finally, we considered how sexual assault damages
unit cohesiveness and morale, which weakens military effectiveness. This analysis shows that
sexual assault impairs military fitness and effectiveness in addition to violating ethical standards
and fundamental rights. The protection of the honor, wellbeing, and readiness of our military
members necessitates robust and varied responses.
