GANG PREVENTION IN YOUTHS 2
Abstract
Gang prevention in youths is a growing problem in the United States. Many times, police officers
try to find ways to deal with this growing problem in local neighborhoods and schools. One idea that
schools can use is to provide intervention services because the amount of time youths spend in there.
Police officers may get involved in these situations, and should find the gangs that are in local areas and
deprive them of their activities. For these events to happen, school-based gang prevention efforts are
targeting juveniles demonstrating risks that are attempts to stop them from gangs before they join them.
Many school based programs are used to specifically target youths that demonstrate risks early on so
that involvement in gangs or crimes can be avoided.

Gang Prevention in Youths
Issue
How can youths involved in gangs be stopped? Gangs in the United States are increasing and are
causing many problems for youths in local neighborhoods. Many times, police officers must get
involved to stop criminal activities involving youths in gangs. Over the years, many schools use gang
prevention programs and local police officers to create ways to talk to or influence the local youths from
joining gangs and making mistakes that may affect their future. One program that may be the answer to
solving gang participations in youths, is the Gang Resistance and Education Training program
(GREAT) that has reported to have had effects on the participants attitudes and resisting peer pressure
(Rodriguez, 2009). Studies now show which youths will join gangs and showing us the likelihood of
gang joining which involve any characteristics of gang membership. The more negative risk factors that
affect against a youth contribute to a student’s chance of becoming a gang member and include issues at
home, and at schools. The number of gangs continues to increase in the United States, the National
Youth Gang Survey found that an increase in 15% of youth gang problems from 2002 to 2008 is
becoming an issue in urban and rural areas (Riley, 2011).

Solution
Gang violence in the United States has become an issue that is being argued with, all 50
states report gang problems and the reports for the increase of over several years. The growth in the
number and size of gangs but most do not know what motivates gangs and to battle their growth. In
Gang Prevention: An Overview of Research and Programs many youths have been asked to join gangs
for protection, enjoyment, money, and to be involved with “friends”. The findings that shocked many
youth gang prevention programs and police officers have found findings that to prevent youth from
joining gangs, communities must strengthen families, and that teachers need to teach youths who are
troubled for them to feel respected. In Gang Prevention: An Overview of Research and Programs,
another way for preventing youths to join gangs, there are ways to strengthen the families, and to
provide tutoring for students who are performing poorly in school.
