De-escalation
De-escalation is a concept that I have learned about over the last eight weeks that
has been impactful to me as a law enforcement officer. This concept is both
theoretical and practical, and it has a significant connection to how we interact with
others. De-escalation refers to the process of reducing the intensity of a conflict or
violent situation. This is done by using communication and problem-solving skills
instead of violence. This concept is widely used in fields such as law enforcement,
health, and education, but it can also be used in everyday life (Goodman et al.,
2020). The concept of de-escalation can be seen in the way Jesus himself interacted
with others. For example, when he was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter
drew his sword and cut off the ear of one of the high priest’s servants. Jesus
responded by healing the servant’s ear and telling Peter, “Put your sword back in
it’s place…for all who draw the sword will die by the sword” (Matthew 26:52). This is
an example of de-escalation because Jesus prevented the situation from escalating
into further violence. The concept of de-escalation is a powerful tool for reducing
conflict, by learning and applying this concept we can become better peacemakers
in our own lives.
Understanding de-escalation techniques has increased my awareness and
comprehension of conflict resolution. Before studying this topic, I may have believed
that force or authority was the most effective way to manage conflict. Police officers
find themselves arriving at work in bad moods and might take out their anger on
their community (Bohm & Haley, 2021, p.294). However, I have learned that de-
escalation techniques, such as active listening, empathy, and maintaining calm,
often leads to more positive outcomes. This knowledge aligns with the teachings of
the Bible, which advocates for peace and love in the force of conflict. The Bible tells
us, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs
15:1). The course materials have emphasized the importance of training in de-
escalation techniques. This training equips individuals with the skills necessary to
manage conflict effectively. In conclusion de-escalation has not only increased my
knowledge but also my wisdom. It has taught me the value of patience and
understanding, aligning with biblical teachings, and promoting a more peaceful
society.
