Learning Goal: I'm working on a religion question and need support to help me study.
1. Summarize Godawa’s distinction between exhortation of sinful acts in movies and exploitation
of sinful acts in movies.
2. Articulate your response. Do you agree or disagree with his conclusions about questionable
content in film? Why or why not?
3. Apply this to the Christian life. Explain how this impacts the way Christians should view movies.

Godawa distinguished between the exhortation of sinful acts in films and the corruption
of sinful films. When it comes to exploitation, Godawa does not hold Hollywood or filmmakers
entirely accountable, but they are trying to fulfill market demands (Godawa, 2002). Excessive
celebration of aggression and glorification of weapons of violence, in my view, is how
Hollywood uses sinful acts. Films of high school adolescents who are mostly "cool" parties
where they take drugs and participate in sexual activities may be indicators of exhortation of
sinful acts in the film.
I agree with Godawa's assertion that Hollywood is not a single entity, as many people
believe. Christians are quick to pass judgment on Hollywood because they think the film
industry is waging war on Christian values and norms. Since there are billions of people on this
earth, and not all of them are Christians, we as Christians do not only feel entitled to material that
represents our values. Moviegoers, in my mind, should be logical thinkers, and they need to
attempt to grasp the logic behind dubious material rather than seeing it as an attack on one's
values or tradition.
Christians should be wary of the material they ingest and socially mindful of the changes
in their environment. Christians must not only understand the current world in which they live,
but they must also watch a wide range of films to effectively use pop culture to communicate
God's word to people of all faiths. Christians need to grasp the modern world rather than denying
or alienating themselves from it.
