Earning a biblical studies or Bible degree presents you with a variety of career choices.
Whether you want to work for a church or elsewhere in the workforce, you're sure to find a
position that aligns with your newfound credential. Knowing the jobs you can pursue with a
Bible degree can make your job search more efficient. In this article, we list the various Bible
degree careers you can pursue in the workforce.
10 Bible degree careers
A Bible degree teaches you how to use the right methods and resources for interpreting
the Bible. Having this knowledge can prepare you for a wide variety of jobs, whether in a church
or your local community. Here are 10 jobs to pursue with a Bible or biblical studies degree,
whether inside or outside the church:
1. Pastor
A pastor leads a Christian congregation and provides counsel to community or
congregation members. They prepare sermons, preach and lead worship services. Pastors also
interpret biblical scripture and help members of the church with crisis situations. Here are some
different types of pastors:
Associate pastor: An associate pastor supports a senior pastor in a congregation.
Working part- or full-time, they help with daily church operations, such as managing church
ministries, supervising volunteers and helping with all church services and events.
Youth pastor: A youth pastor leads the younger population, typically children and
teenagers, of a religious ministry. They encourage these individuals to worship, volunteer and
help with community outreach.
Teaching pastor: These pastors lead faith-based teaching within their church's
congregation. Teaching pastors review the teaching material for Bible studies, prepare sermons
and preach during church worship services.
2. Director
Directors lead a branch of ministry within a church. They provide administrative leadership,
work alongside other church members and use their biblical knowledge to make important
decisions. Here are the different types of director jobs you can pursue with a Bible degree:
Youth director: A youth director oversees programs and activities for children and young
adults at a church. They may also train volunteers.
Worship director: Worship directors lead the musical portion of a church's worship
service. They work with the church's musical staff, choir members and other worship leaders.
Women's ministry director: This type of director oversees a ministry's group of women.
They lead Bible studies, support groups and events for women within the congregation.
Men's ministry director: Men’s ministry directors organize, plan and direct programs
meant to help men grow spiritually. They promote Bible studies, cultivate outreach among men
in the community and partner with other ministries to support families.
3. Chaplain
A chaplain is a clergy member tied to a religious tradition who provides religious services
and support to community members. They perform religious rites and worship services and
offer counseling and advisement on religious and moral matters. Chaplains also oversee
education programs, evaluate patients and establish spiritual care plans alongside medical and
mental health professionals.
4. Missionary
A missionary travels to a geographical area to promote their faith or to provide their
services, such as education or social justice. They may attempt to make disciples all over the
world. Whether missionaries work short- or long-term, they preach, teach and share their
religious teachings.
5. Teacher
Some Bible degree holders teach in the public or private school system. Keep in mind that
working in the public school system requires state certifications. Some private schools, such as
Christian schools, don't require certifications. Holding a Bible or biblical studies degree can
provide you with a strong foundation for teaching a Christian education. Teachers prepare
lesson plans, educate students and different grade levels, assign homework and administer
tests.
6. Writer
Bible degree holders typically read, write and interpret Scripture. Growing these skills can
help you find employment as a writer in the workforce. With a Bible degree, you may find
qualify for a job at a Christian or non-Christian publication, such as a magazine, newspaper or
online publication.
7. Minister
A minister is an ordained spiritual leader who performs religious ceremonies or functions.
They lead prayer and worship services, preach to people within the church and teach classes on
religion. Ministers also meet with people seeking counsel or advice regarding spiritual or
personal direction. As a minister, you can serve a particular age group within a church. For
example, as a youth minister, you provide religious education to the church's young children
and adolescents.
8. Family and child social worker
If you pursued a Bible degree, you may want a career where you can serve people in need,
such as a family and child social worker. These professionals provide services to improve a
child's or family's social and psychological functioning. A family and child social worker may
connect a family with housing or child care. They also find a safe environment for abused and
abandoned children, such as a foster home, and coordinate adoptions. Keep in mind that to
pursue this career, you're required to further your education beyond a Bible degree.
9. Digital marketer
A Bible degree can help you earn a job as a digital marketer for a religious organization.
These digital marketers use digital channels to promote participation in various church-related
programs. They use digital strategies to improve engagement from audiences across different
communication channels. Digital marketers essentially oversee the creation of digital content
that's shared on a church or religious organization's social media platforms, emails, blog or
website.
10. Guidance counselor
Guidance counselors advise students and help them make important academic and
personal decisions. If you work for a religious school, a Bible degree can help you speak to
students on a spiritual level. Guidance counselors provide students with private counseling,
assess their abilities and potential and work alongside other professionals at their school. They
also identify behavioral problems, develop counseling strategies and schedule orientations and
internships.
