Lab Report Investigating Chemical Reactions
Activity One: Synthesis Reaction
My room temperature was 72 degrees Fahrenheit. The temp of the damp steel wool was
20 degrees Celsius. After 5 minutes of the steel wrapped around the thermometer, it was 29
degrees Celsius. After 10 minutes the temp went down to 28 degrees Celsius. After 10 minutes
the vinegar-treated steel wool looks more rust-like. The vinegar turned it to a copper/rust color.

Once it swirled it brought bubbles (gas) to the top.
Standard Test for Gaseous Products:
A: Glowing Splint – when inserted all the bubbles disappeared
B: Flaming Splint – It made a pop noise and the flame went out.
Activity Two: Decomposition Reaction
While observing the decomposition for one minute I saw it puff up at the top, have
bubbles (gas) in the center, and the peroxide at the bottom.
3
Flamming Splint – as I inserted the flame it popped and went out.
Activity Three: Single-Replacement Reaction
While observing for 10 minutes; Once the tube went in, it started to bubble from the
magnesium strip. Then I noticed the bubbles of water coming from the rubber stopper. As I
continued to observe I saw the water disappearing from the tube to the beaker.

A: Glowing Splint – it did nothing once inserted
B: Flamming Splint – Caused the flame to get bigger.
Activity 4: Double-Replacement Reaction
Once I poured the baking soda into the cup it immediately started to bubble up. Once I
got the paper over it, it settled down. The contents were milky white in color.

When observing the gases from the candle flame with the cup of vinegar and baking soda
I noticed that the flame would follow as I moved the cup over it.

Activity 5: Combustion Reaction
I wasn’t sure that I did this exercise the right way. I didn’t really notice anything. I did see
what appeared to be soot on the rim of the test tube.
Activity Seven: Combustion Reaction
After five minutes the limewater seemed to have gone back to normal.
7
Activity 6: Precipitation Reaction
I observed the mixing of the vinegar and baking soda to react and leave through the tube
to the limewater. Once it hit the limewater it looked as if it was sent back into the test tube. The
limewater would rise and bubble some.
The photos do not do this assignment justice. The videos that I took are amazing. It
shows everything much better than a photo ever could.
What I observed was very cool. It looked like heat lightning. Like watching electricity.
