The observation method used for this video is an informal direct observation (Drummond, et. al
2020). The man being observed has multiple personalities or Dissociative Identity Disorder
(DID). He presents as well groomed, middle aged man, who walks and talks without difficulty.
During the counseling session it can be observed that he is agitated, when switching to a different
personality of a little boy Anthony, he rubs his neck vigorously with his hand. He gets a blank
stare in his eyes, his hand is trembling, he rubs his face, he seems to be scared. He repeatedly
covers his face with his hand. He keeps looking up as if there is someone who he sees but does
not want to make eye contact with. His voice is that of a child that is about to cry. His facial
features express a distressed look on his face. He looks to Roberta as if for comfort because he is
afraid. He is agitated as the counselor asks questions about the little boy. It seems that Richard
can only be that little boy for a brief moment. He seems to be in real distress. When the
counselor probs Richard switches by violently coughing and rubbing his face. Richard’s disorder
has been proven scientifically to be a splitting of the brain. Sar et. at (2017) reconfirm what the
video mentions that DID is a proven neurobiological disorder triggered by stressful events.
Watching this video with sound and without sound gave me the opportunity to really examine his
facial features as he is changing personalities.
