DISCUSSION BOARD ONE

Since the beginning of times, God had a strategy for creating the world/ earth and all that
abides within it from the plants, earth, water, animals, and humanity, which he made in his
image. Everything within the earth has a job that ensures that the earth perseveres for years to
come. God himself performed many jobs when he created the earth, he designed, planned, and
executed his plans within six days, and on the seventh day, he rested. When God created
humanity, he knew that he wanted humankind to be rational thinkers for them to be innovative
and to create societal structures. For Genesis 1:28 New King James Version states, “Then God
blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have
dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves
on the earth” (Genesis 1:28 New King James Version (NKJV), 2021). Furthermore, humanity
was created to work and to conduct their work with dignity, servitude, and with the love of God
being that driven factor. This discussion board post will cover Keller’s big-picture thinking,
Hardy’s introductory thoughts, and the three related implications for the role of human resources.
Keller’s Big -Picture Thinking
Keller's big-picture thinking is something I always refer to when speaking with others
concerning jobs and selecting a field of interest to work within. Keller et al. (2012) state that the
fact that God put work in paradise is startling because we so often think of work as a necessary
evil or even punishment (pg. 23). Nevertheless, conducting work is not evil or punishment. It is

one of humankind's necessities to survive, much so like food, water, clothing, and rest. Work
helps us be whole; we need it to serve our purpose/ calling that God has bestowed upon our lives.
Moreover, we are not to become too consumed with work because our relationship with God is
essential for our lives. We are to glorify and honor God in all that we do. Making him the center
of our lives, for Joshua 24:15 King James Version state, "And if it seem evil unto you to serve
the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served
that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but
as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”[ CITATION Jos20 \l 1033 ].
Hardy’s Introductory Thoughts
Hardy's preliminary thoughts resonate with Keller's big-picture thoughts. Hardy (1990)
states that work is indeed a "fundamental dimension of human existence" (pg. xi). Additionally,
Hardy mentions that the meaning of work must change, they insist, because the spirit has too
long informed it of modern individualism, a spirit which promotes the idea of work as a means of
private advancement rather than a public contribution, a spirit which will rend the social fabric of
our society and erode our democratic institutions if allowed to have full sway in American life
(pg. xiv). He also expands upon modern Americans' individualism in two forms: utilitarian and
expressionist (pg. XV). Keller et al. mention in Every Good Endeavor how individuals tend to be
consumed with their jobs and make their jobs idols. Keller et al. and Hardy both reference how
the Greeks viewed work as a duty that animals and those that were not smart or, in reality, wealth
performed.
The Three Related Implications for The Role of Human Resources
According to Valentine et al. (2020), human resource management is designing formal
systems in an organization to manage human talent for accomplishing organizational goals

(pg.4). A few responsibilities of the human resource department are to ensure employees are
placed in the right job, trained, rewarded, and given feedback. Hence, the development and
implementation of business strategies are based upon an organizations’ areas of strength, which
contributes significantly to achieving organizational goals and maintaining a competitive
advantage within an organization given industry. Additionally, the human resource department is
tasked with its organization’s core competencies, such as human capital, productivity, customer
service, quality, innovation, and organizational culture.
“HR management involves designing the formal systems that are used to manage people
in an organization “(Valentine, Meglich, Mathis, & Jackson,2020, pg.11). The seven human
resource management subsystem functions that are influenced by internal and external forces,
which are as followed: strategy and planning, equal employment opportunity, talent acquisition,
talent management, total rewards, risk management and worker protections, and employee and
labor relations. The three of the related implications for the human resources as a strategic
function in any business, would be as followed: (a) strategy and planning, (b) risk management
and worker protections, and (c) employee and labor relations.
Strategy and Planning
“The strategy and planning subsystem is the process of defining organizational strategy,
or direction, and allocating resources (capital and people) toward its achievement” (Valentine,
Meglich, Mathis, & Jackson,2020, pg.36). According to Chakraborty et al. (2019) HR
department plays a profuse role in planning for the human resource of the firm to optimize the
utilization of their potentials that would help support and meet the business as well as strategic
goal of the firm [CITATION Cha19 \p 659 \l 1033 ]. Additionally, HR planning programs ensure
managing people within a planned framework and make them develop their performance that

becomes a source of sustained competitive advantage for an organization. The strategy and
planning subsystem include the assessment of the current status of a business and the
environmental forces that may be important during the strategic planning phase.
Risk Management and Worker Protections
A significant role of human resources management is to manage employee risks. Hence,
HR’s responsibility is to keep employees safe and ensure that an organization is not accountable
for any employee injuries. Therefore, human resources ensure that workplace safety is an
essential part of keeping employees happy and productive. If employees feel unsafe, they are less
likely to be productive. HR carries this responsibility, and it is not taken lightly. When HR
departments focus on maintaining a safe work environment, they tend to be respected by their
coworkers and respected by their superiors.
Employee and Labor Relations
The employee and labor relations subsystem implies that the relationship between
managers and their employees must be handled legally and effectively. There is a strong ethical
case for focusing on employee well-being[CITATION Gue17 \p 22 \l 1033 ] . Hence, this
subsystem indicates the importance of HR policies and procedures so that all knows how to
conduct themselves professionally within the workplace, as well as the development, and
communication of policies and procedures.
In conclusion, God designed humanity to perform work, as God did with creating Earth
and all things that abide within the Earth. Furthermore, as God's creation, we all are to perform
our jobs/tasks with dignity and procreate and subdue the lands, which is a way of God creating/
working through us. Moreover, we are to display the love that we have for God and our
neighbors by serving others with our work. Hardy and Keller et al. both expand upon how work

has been viewed over many historical eras. Keller et al. (2012) refer to the Greek philosopher's
ideology of work, stating that human beings were to become like God's by withdrawing from
active life and devoting themselves to contemplation (Keller & Alsdoft, 1990, pg. 33). Greeks
sought to escape the necessity of work altogether and live in a way that takes part in the gods'
immortality (Keller & Alsdoft, 2012, pg. 8), which was altogether a misconception. Furthermore,
both Hardy and Keller et al. quoted the Greek philosopher Aristotle famously quoted, "Some
people are just cut out to be slaves." (Hardy, 1990, pg. 10) During the Renaissance Era, the
Renaissance thinkers concluded that human beings were not to become like God through mere
thinking but through productive activity (Hardy, 1990, Pg.27).
The HR departments of all organizations, whether it be in house or an outsourced duty is
to ensure that every individual possesses the qualifications to fulfill a job description, conduct
training, enforce all state and federal laws, ensure the safety of all employees, and so forth. This
is a significant task that requires the individuals working in the department to have attention to
detail. Furthermore, the HR department is continuously working out chaotic situations to ensure
an organization's sustainability.
