It is essential to understand the concepts, advantages, and disadvantages of a case study
and consulting to identify a good problem. There is a clear difference between these two types of
research methods. “Professors and research group leaders may engage junior researchers in
consulting work to broaden their profile and to point to career opportunities outside academe
(Fudickar & Hottenrott, 2018).” Digital transformation, artificial intelligence, workforce
strategy, energy, analytics, and consumers are some of the right consulting topics. On the other
hand, case studies are used by many disciplines. For example, the case study method has been
used to promote active learning in a small molecule crystallography course for chemistry
students. “Compared with a traditional lecture format, assigning small groups of students to
examine literature case studies encourages more active engagement with the course material and
stimulates improved class discussion (Campbell, Powers, & Zheng, 2015).” It demonstrates that
case studies can be used when the investigator is looking for many details as other methods do
not offer this advantage.
