What makes a good problem if it is for a case study?
Case studies are “in-depth appreciations of an issue, event or phenomenon of interest in
its natural real-life context” (Crowe et al., 2011). As an in-depth study, a case study involves a
multilevel research approach of an interest topic. The first level of the research approach is to
develop or find a good problem. A good problem needs to be concise and well-constructed.
Problems can arise in subjects where there is a lack of scholarship, or how a current solution to a
problem can be improved. Another important characteristic in a good problem for a case study is
interest (Robson & McCartan, 2016). If a researcher is not interested in their problem, it can
make the case study difficult to complete when the first issue or struggle in research arises.
However, interest can also allow for biases to occur within the case study. Biases will
always appear in a case study as it is impossibly to be completely removed from a topic of
interest or problem. Motivation on why a case study is being done is important when thinking
about biases in case studies (Rosenbaum, 2015). If a case study is being completed and paid for
by a company, then there is a concern about the integrity of the results as motivation for a
positive case study could be a payout for the researcher. Thus, it is important for case studies to
be backed by evidence provided through relevant literature and systematic reviews (Robson &
McCartan, 2016).
What makes a good problem if it is for consulting?
The aim of consulting is to provide businesses or firms assistance with an issue or
concern by offering professional services. An example of consulting can be a roofing company
that does a consult with a customer about their damaged roof. The customer hired the roofing
company to come out and assess their roof, then provide them with options on services of how to
repair the roof. In these cases, the problems are typically in a physical nature and can be fixed

with physical materials, so a good problem for consulting is one that is precise and physical in
nature that requires a solution. Management consulting is similar in that it assesses a firm’s
economic or operation activity and offers available solutions to fix the problems (Ibatova,
Kuzmenko, & Klychova, 2018). Economic and operational problems are physical issues that a
consultant can review and offer viable solutions for.

This article can be used as a tool to understand what a case study is and how it can
be useful within social science disciplines. Concepts of what makes a good case
study is explained and warnings of what to avoid in case studies are given.

A textbook that offers readers developmental tools on how to conduct research and the
different types of real-world research available to use. This is beneficial for students and
other beginner researchers as it provides step-by-step instructions and guidelines on how
to conduct research.

This article expresses the biases that can occur during case studies within the medical
field. Rosenbaum expresses that money, education, and influence can all be points of
biases. Therefore, case studies within the medical field need to be ‘careful studies’ where
close attention is paid to medical professionals completing the study as well as the public.
