Academic Versus Applied Research
What are the common differences between Academic Research and Applied Research?
When comparing both methods of research, it is important to understand the differences
between each research methods. Academic research methods refer to conducting research base
on or for the field of interest. This research is based primarily on theoretical information based
on real world information that supports your research. When researchers want to build upon an
exiting theory, researchers will utilize “for filed” to add more knowledge on that field.
Applied research is research that is conducted in your field of interest or study. This
research methods are done to solve practical problems of specific situations. Applied research
has several different phases that are applied within the research. The identification of a problem,
results of the problem, and implementation of solutions. Applied research follows a step-by-step
process to produce specified outcomes as it is based on acquiring new knowledge about a
specific objective (Mello & Woods Jr, 2019).
The major difference between both research methodologies is that fact that academic
research is conducted to make recommendations and applied research aims to implement
changes in the field of study. Researchers are not looking to solve the problem that is being
research but only make recommendations. Another common difference is who the researchers
are that are conducting the research. If working in a medical field for example, a researcher
would be someone within the medical field that identifies a specific problem and aims to solve
that problem.
When is it most appropriate to use Academic Research?
It is best to use the academic research method in the advancement of knowledge within
the field of study (Bently et al., 2015). Academic research can be used as a teaching mechanism

for principle or concepts. When researchers are attempting to investigate a specific problem or
change the view point of a hypothesis to achieve goals or form more questions to expand the
discussion of the subject. This form of research is appropriate in academic teachings, expandtion
of knowledge or identifying where more research should be conducted. This method is great for
student entering the real world industries.
When is it most appropriate to use Applied Research?
Applied research is best suited to solve a specific real-world problem that has been
identified and in turn, develop a solution for that targeted problem. It is the practical application
to develop a technique to find the solution of the problem. Strict protocols are followed when
using this method as your research preference. A specific example of the use of applied research,
was noted in the journal article (Mervis & Malakoff, 2021), as the subject of the article describes
the current administrations use of applied research in research and development to translate
science into practical application tool for climate change.
What style of research interests you the most?
Currently, academic research is of most interest since this provides establish literature
that has been peer-reviewed by other scholars already in the field of business. It is best to learn
more about some of the established procedures that are in place for business organizations and
how organizations use the information that they are provided. As an example, the use of big data
by organizations to make decisions that relates to the profitability of the organization and how to
apply compensation for successful CEO’s. There is much academic research that have been
conducted that provides an in-depth analysis of the use of big data by organization. It is
fascination to read many of that research.

“God understand the way [to wisdom] and He knows it’s place [for wisdom is with God
alone]” (Gosple Communications, 2008)
We must understand the way that has been set for us by God. He grants us the wisdom we seek
to understand and work through our situations and struggles. When we seek the right answers,
God will grant us the wisdom we need at the right time and place. We must not rush to achieve
what is not meant to be achieved before the set time and place.
