Identify Key Characteristics of Applied Behavior Analysis and Research Interests

Mrs. Taylor patience’s with Sarah were growing thin. Mrs. Taylor completed the
necessary paperwork to refer Sarah to PhD. Thomas the school psychologist a few weeks ago.
Mrs. Taylor finally had a meeting with PhD. Thomas this afternoon. Mrs. Taylor cannot wait to
find out what she can do to get Sarah back under control in her classroom. Mrs. Taylor were
asked to explain Sarah’s problems Mrs. Taylor says, “I can’t get Sarah to do anything! She is
talking to other students and to herself out loud during my lesson. During independent
assignments, Sarah will not do her assignments. Instead, Sarah looks out the window or gets up
and stand by the window. Sarah is seventeen years old, and she can’t read on grade level.” PhD.
Thomas asks Mrs. Taylor what she would like for Sarah to do instead. Mrs. Taylor was silent for
a moment then she responds, “I would like Sarah to be on-task and perform on grade level.”
PhD. Thomas listed three target behaviors he identified for Sarah. The three target
behaviors are as followed: Sarah speaks during class without raising her hand, Sarah cannot
translate words on her current grade level, and Sarah stares or stands by the window. After PhD.
Thomas identified the target behaviors he then listed three desired behaviors that he identified for
Sarah. The three replacement behaviors are as followed: Sarah will raise her hand in class each
time before speaking, Sarah will increase the number of words she can translate by 20% from
baseline, and Sarah will face the teacher in class.
In order to succeed, all young people will need an education. Having an education will
help prepare them for work but also life. Education represents clear path to the American dream.
However, achieving the American dream is not so simple especially if developmental conditions
play a role in acquiring an education. “Early childhood and early child education are important
basis for later development, education performance, and pathways as well as for lifelong learning
and well-being[CITATION Sab \p 1 \l 1033 ]”. Therefore, it is utterly important that people with

developmental conditions receive an effective education. In order to receive an effective
education applied behavior analysis will play a significant part in reaching success. “Applied
behavior analysis was particularly prominent within early childhood special
education[CITATION Col19 \p 235 \l 1033 ]”. Applied behavior analysis helps someone to
understand individual learning patterns, how the environment effects their development, and
learn how to approach developmental conditions. Utilizing applied behavior analysis in the
classroom will help teachers or practitioners to deal with challenging behaviors. Implementing
applied behavior analysis strategies in the classroom allows someone to reinforce the problem
behavior by following a behavioral intervention plan. Following a behavioral intervention plan
allows the teacher to identify the target behavior and replace it with another behavior that is
effective.
During my childhood there were a lot of students that had developmental conditions in
school. However, teachers did not understand the behaviors and did not know how to deal with
them so many students were held back a grade or even expelled. Because no one wanted to
understand the student’s behavior and try to change the behavior the students had to endure
hardship throughout school but also outside of school. If the students were prompted with
additional resources like behavioral interventions, then I truly believe they would have a better
chance of furthering their education or completing everyday living tasks. Having an education
will help anyone to achieve their goals. However, that is what we were taught. No one never
mention what about people with developmental conditions. People with developmental
conditions deserve the same opportunities just as someone without a developmental condition.
Decided to conduct further research on the topic education that is related to applied behavior
analysis is dear to me. Witnessing how so many students were being punish because no one

could understand their behaviors really took a toll on me personally. Close friends and family
were victims, some dropped out of school, and are incarnated. I truly believe that conducting
more intensive research on the topic is needed. However, research should be conducting on
minorities much more due to other factors that plays apart in their living conditions and their
education. Not every student with developmental conditions lives in the same environment or
attend a fully funded school in a nice neighborhood. More research needs to be conducted in
environments that heavily impacts the student education.
