How can a person become a successful leader by being humble?
A person can be a successful leader by being humble, as we should all be humble as
servants of God. The Bible teaches humility, values, and morals that can all be applied to
becoming an effective leader. Today's global economy will challenge any leader to complex
situations and mind boggling tasks, but a successful leader will be able to recognize that he/she
will never have all the answers. Assistants, office managers and accountants, to name a few,
maintain the day to day operations of any office, but a true leader is ultimately the one in control
of how all the operations take place (Melville, 2009). This brings us to the question, what is
humility? why is this trait needed to be a successful leader?
In the Bible, humility is stated as a quality of being courteously and respectful of others.
It is the opposite of aggressiveness, arrogance, and vanity (Humility, n.d.). Being humble means
putting God and others first. Humility comes with the knowledge that God's creation as a whole
transcends our own personal interests. This is how a true leader should think and act. Being a
leader is not about what we want, but how we can serve others. If we posses this skill as a regular
human being and follow the example in our owns lives, our behaviors tend to transcend to our
business environment as well. Stephens (2013) said it best when he repeated a quote from our
sixth U.S. President John Quincy Adams in relation to leadership, "If your actions inspire others
to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." (p. 128)
Why is it an important leadership trait to serve others first?
It is important as a leader to serve others first as this leadership trait focuses on leading
by example. The Lord is our leader, and we follow his footsteps. We must show others that we
lead by example and that we practice what we preach. Serving others first in a leadership role is

known as servant leadership. Servant leadership is about serving first and leading second. Today,
the business environment has become less deferential: respect and authority must be earned and
leadership is not simply a function of position (Chacksfield, 2014). Integrity and selflessness are
crucial qualities that leaders must poses. An industry that has adopted servant leadership is the
healthcare industry. Chacksfield (2014) states that there are ten principles of servant leadership
which are as follows:
1. Listening 6. Conceptualization
2. Empathy 7. Foresight
3. Healing 8. Stewardship
4. Awareness 9. Building Community
5. Persuasion 10. Commitment
As disciples of God, the principles stated above are all principles we should posses as
human beings, not just leaders. The Bible tells us to look out for each other and serving others
first is important because we show humility and selfishness. This behavior leads to higher
engagement, more trust, and stronger relationships among our peers (Chacksfield, 2014). As
stated in Acts 20:35 "In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must
help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more
blessed to give than to receive." (ESV).
What is the importance of relying on Jesus’ will and ways as it relates to leadership?
As stated earlier, the Bible teaches us humility, values, and morals that we should apply
to our daily lives as we are here on this earth following our own leader, Jesus Christ. Let us not
forget that Jesus was the leader of twelve disciples and a much greater group of followers beyond

them (Luke 10:1-17, ESV). Jesus himself led by being a servant and serving alongside all his
followers.
The Bible mentions that each person is valuable and no one is of lesser value than is
someone else. Today's leaders must be careful to value each person under their authority "fairly,
equitably, and without the influence of such factors as ethnicity, education or social class"
(Flaniken, 2006). We must learn to be the best we can be first, and this is the only way we can
serve others, and in essence serve God. Jesus Christ Himself taught us, "just as the Son of Man
did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Matthew
20:28, ESV). Let us not forget that we do not belong to ourselves; we all belong to Jesus Christ.
We are here to serve and please him. As a leader this applies as well.
