When surveying all the progress we have made in the world over the past five decades,
some of the accomplishments that really stand out to me are the human genome project, the
invention of the iPhone, and most recently, the development of the Covid-19 vaccine. These all
stand out not only as incredible accomplishments, but also as projects as defined by Larson and
Gray (2021), having the following: 1) an established objective, 2) defined lifespan, 3) usually
involvement of several departments or professionals, 4) something new, and 5) specific
requirements of cost, time and performance. What allowed these specific projects to become
some of the greatest accomplishments of the past five decades was excellent management over
the project, just like it says in Proverbs 15:22 (NIV), “without counsel plans fail, but with many
advisers they succeed.”
The project to discuss is the human genome project. This project was born out of an
initial idea for a study to detect mutations in DNA from the survivors of the atomic bomb in
Japan from World War II (Moraes & Goes, 2016). It was first envisioned by the United State
Energy Department, and eventually transformed into the objective of sequencing the entire
