Abstract
The purpose of this overview is to provide foundational knowledge on key topics such as case
study types, compositional structures, and the application of biblical integration. The three types
of case studies as outlined by Yin (2018) are represented by exploratory, explanatory, and
descriptive case studies. In reviewing the application of these approaches, a key theme of the
evaluation of “how” and “why” questions is presented (Yin, 2018). As the discussion progresses,
a focus is placed on case study compositional structures which are represented by single,
multiple, holistic, and embedded case study formats (Yin, 2018). When applying these designs,
the multiple case study approach typically allows for more insight as the single case study design
has limited generalizability due to the nature of the format (De Freitas et al., 2021). Further
expounding on case study compositional structure alternatives such as linear-analytical and
comparative are analyzed as well as several other examples to provide well-rounded research.
Lastly, the application of the goodness of work is reviewed in how exploratory case studies can
bring glory to God in conjunction with the insight and worldview of Keller (2012). Each of these
items is discussed at the foundational level with support from various scholarly sources.
