Diversity of the healthcare workforce, healthcare globalization, use of technology, focus on teamwork in
patient care, integrated delivery systems (IDS), pay for performance model, and use of social media as a
communication tool are all current trends in healthcare that will affect healthcare human resource
management (HRM). Discuss in detail (based on current research) the impact of 1 of the above noted
trends on the healthcare industry and the current initiatives or strategies formulated to confront the
trend of your choosing.
Your replies to your classmates' threads must be substantive.
The development and expansion within the healthcare industry has relied on the advances
made in technology, with those advances making a significant impact on not only the level of
patient care available, but also administrative aspects of running a successful facility.
Technology is found to be used in a majority of the functions throughout a hospital or clinic.
One example revolves around patient records. At one time, all records were hand written, and
stored in files. Advancements in information recording technology now allows for a digital
version of patient’s medical record to be generated, called electronic medical records, which is
more easily maintained and shared between facilities. When looking at the human resource
department, technology advancements have developed new training methods, such as e-learning
programs, to allow for reaching a larger audience, without requiring all individuals to sit in a
classroom.
Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged the Gulf Coast in 2005, provided a true understanding
of the importance and impact electronic medical records (EMRs) have had in the healthcare
industry. EMRs are described as a “system that contains a patient’s personal medical history, test
results, dictations, and other medical and financial information” [Bro10]. Physicians found
themselves lacking needed medical data for individuals seeking emergency treatment after the
hurricane, and because of the destruction of the records during the storm, that data was not
recoverable[Bro10]. The ability to document and store patient data electronically has been
shown to play role in the lives of patients and healthcare providers, including nurses and
physicians, on a daily basis. The ability to access and utilize this type of technology provides for
a more accessible and accurate tracking of patient data, eliminating the need to document
everything on paper. The ongoing developments within EMR technology has also assisted in
bridging the gap of sharing data between different healthcare facilities, reducing the risks of
mistreatment and/or misdiagnosis, while reducing costs by preventing the need to repeat testing.
Human resources management (HRM) has also seen advancements with the development
and implementation of new technologies. E-learning is just one example of where technology
has assisted in streamlining the training of future and existing employees. The use of this method
of instruction has been found to be less costly and less time consuming[Pyn11]. The utilization
of this manner of training involves streaming media, simulators, virtual reality, expert systems,
distance learning, electronic support and learning management systems[Pyn11]. When looking
at the benefits of this form of training, the use of simulators is a prime example. The use of this
e-learning tool allows the employee to participate in simulated situations, bringing a level of
realism to the training process, prior to interacting with real patients. An additional example of
how the advancements in technology have benefitted HRM is through the development and use
of e-recruiting systems. E-recruiting systems assist in reaching a larger pool of potential new
employees, not being limited to resources residing locally. In addition, this tool provides HRM
with the ability to electronically accept and track applications while also providing applicants
with a virtual job preview [Pyn11]. The use of technology, HRM is now able to screen
employees and conduct interviews more efficiently.
HRM, to improve the level of quality and efficiency in performing the duties of this
department, needs to not only utilize, but also understand the technology made available to them.
Research has shown that there is an overall need for HRM to expand their skill sets beyond what
has been identified as traditional and or standard[Mah12]. The consistent usage and
incorporation of technology allows for continued advancement, allowing for the evolution and
growth HRM. As stated in one article, “Technology and HRM have a broad range of influences
upon each other, and HR professionals should be able to adopt technologies that allow the
reengineering of the HR function” [Mis10].
“Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance”
(Proverbs 1:5, NIV). Ongoing technology advancements will not only improve the capabilities
of HRMA, but provide greater assistance to staff seeking help or additional training. God is
always there to instill His wisdom and understanding, and it is our job as Christians to share His
wisdom to those around us. Listening and following the words of our Lord allows each of us to
use the talents He has given and to assist any in need.
