Three Laws Assignment
Overtime there have been laws set in place to protect people who cannot protect themselves,
and to keep the workplace environment fair to all. The three laws this paper will discuss are Title
VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, American with Disabilities Act, and Fair Labor Standards Act.
These laws are a few of the many that set groundbreaking precedents in the workplace. If not
for them, things would look drastically different.
The Civil Rights Act “prohibits discrimination on the basis of race or color, national origin,
gender, and religion” (Judge & Kammeyer-Mueller, 2022, p. 76). This was established during a
time of civil unrest in America, and this law made great leaps for African Americans, Hispanics,
women, and minority religious groups. From a Christian worldview, the bible calls for fairness
and impartiality; people must continue to do what is right especially for the vulnerable. Micah
6:8 says, “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee,
but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” (King James Bible,
1769/2021). Creating an environment where all are welcomed makes the workplace thrive. It
introduced diversity and with that many opinions and values are interchanged to make things
better for everyone. This law helped foster a positive work environment and protects people
from unfairness, harassment, and hostility.
The Americans with Disabilities Act is another law that required businesses to include a
once unprotected class. “The ADA’s basic purpose is to prohibit discrimination against
individuals with disabilities who are qualified for the job, and to require the employer to make
reasonable accommodation for such individuals unless it would cause undue hardship for the
employer” (Judge & Kammeyer-Mueller, 2022, p. 78). This shows how people who may not be
seen as normal still deserve dignity and respect. This is a stance on inclusion and people must
show compassion but fairness to each other. The bible says, “For thou hast possessed my reins;
thou hast covered me in my mother's womb” Psalms 139:13 (King James Bible, 1769/2021). We

are created in God’s image, as perfect beings just as we are. We are protected in life beginning
before we are born and we must continue to trust in the Lord through all we must go through in
life. With these staffing laws in place, we can all move forward in life knowing we are protected
in all things that require us to be at our best. We are not mistakes; we are loved and must
continue to include those who are surviving tough times and remind them we they are covered.
Lastly, the Fair Labor Standards Act has established a payment system for employees and
protects minors from being employed. Major keys to this law are the prevention of exploitation
for labor, establishing basic compensation for workers, and record keeping for employees. This
law has protected young children from being forcibly employed in businesses for cheap wages.
FLSA drastically changed the climate of labor for businesses. With the introduction of 40-hour
work weeks and overtime pay, employers were forced to hire more employees now that they
could not take advantage of holding their employees’ hostage. Jeremiah 22:13 says, “Woe unto
him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong, that useth his
neighbour’s service without wages, and giveth him not for his work,” (King James Bible,
1769/2021). The belief from God and lawmakers is that people who participate in hard work
and provide services should be paid for their work, when their work is complete. Wages are
earned through hard work, and people who take advantage of these people are committing a
horrible sin.
