DISCUSSION THREAD: WHY BUSINESS MATTERS TO GOD 2
In his thought-provoking book, "Why Business Matters to God," Jeff Van Duzer delves
into the intriguing idea that business, often seen as a secular endeavor, holds profound
significance in the eyes of God. This discussion will explore Van Duzer's perspective on why
business matters to God, providing insights from the book and a relevant biblical verse to support
this notion. We will delve into why business, from a spiritual and ethical standpoint, holds a
special place in the divine scheme of things.
Business as a Reflection of God's Creative Nature
Van Duzer emphasizes that business, as an enterprise built on creation, mirrors God's
creative character. In Genesis 1:27, we read, "So God created mankind in his image, in the image
of God he created them; male and female he created them." As humans are created in God's
image, their capacity to innovate, create, and engage in commerce can reflect God's creative
nature. Business allows individuals to co-create with God, thereby contributing to the ongoing
development of the world.
Furthermore, he highlights that business promotes stewardship of God's resources. When
businesses effectively manage and utilize resources, they act as responsible stewards, in line with
the biblical principles of stewardship. It underscores the significance of business in God's eyes,
as it aligns with His intention for humans to responsibly manage the Earth's resources.
Business as a Platform for Loving Our Neighbors
Van Duzer argues that business provides a unique opportunity for individuals to love their
neighbors, following Jesus' commandment to "love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:39).
Through ethical and compassionate business practices, individuals can impact the lives of
employees, customers, suppliers, and communities positively. This perspective aligns with
biblical values of justice, fairness, and love for fellow human beings.

Moreover, businesses have the potential to address societal issues and promote social
justice. Van Duzer cites examples of companies that have taken steps to eradicate poverty,
provide employment opportunities, and support charitable causes. Such actions align with the
biblical call to "do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8) and
underscore the importance of business in advancing God's kingdom on Earth.
Business as a means to Serve God
Van Duzer contends that business can be a means to serve God by pursuing excellence
and integrity in all aspects of work. Colossians 3:23-24 states, "Whatever you do, work heartily,
as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as
your reward." This verse highlights the idea that work, including business endeavors, can be an
act of worship when performed with dedication and integrity.
Furthermore, Van Duzer suggests that business leaders can be agents of transformation
within their organizations, fostering a culture that reflects God's values. By prioritizing ethical
decision-making, investing in employee development, and pursuing sustainability, business
leaders can embody Christian principles and contribute positively to society.
To sum up, "Why Business Matters to God" offers a profound reevaluation of the role of
business within the divine framework. Through this discussion, we have explored the notions
that business mirrors God's creative nature, provides a platform for loving our neighbors, and
serves to honor and serve God Himself. Faith and business are not merely an abstract idea but a
practical and moral imperative. It challenges us to view our daily work not as a secular endeavor
separate from our spirituality but as an opportunity to glorify God through our actions, decisions,
and interactions. It can be a means to express our Faith, love our neighbors, and participate in the
ongoing work of creation. In this light, business undeniably matters to God, as it embodies the

potential for humanity to fulfill its divine calling, contributing to a more just, compassionate, and
thriving world.
