Discussion Thread: State Farm - Dangerous Intersections
1. Identify the various constructs and concepts involved in the study.
A construct is an abstract idea specifically invented for a given research purpose,
typically made up of simpler concepts, while the concepts themselves are much more
concrete bundles of characteristics associated with certain objects, events, situations,
conditions, or behaviors. (Schindler, 2022).
The main construct in this study is the cause of the accidents that are making the
intersections so dangerous, which State Farm was trying to identify in order to make
improvements and reduce risk. The concepts involved in the study relate to the
characteristics of the crashes that were recorded. These characteristics included severity
of the crash, and level of traffic in the intersection. The study was limited to only
accidents where the driver at fault was insured by State Farm, which also made data
collection simple because they already had the records and reports. They also limited the
study to incidents that occured in an intersection or within intersecting roads, excluding
any accident that occurred at the intersection of a road and a highway access or egress
ramp.
2. What hypothesis might drive the research of one of the cities on the top 10
dangerous intersection list?
The purpose of this study was to identify the most dangerous intersections, the
