History
The Coca-Cola Company has come a long way since its beginnings as a soda fountain
store in downtown Atlanta Georgia in 1886. First served at Jacob’s Pharmacy by its creator John
S. Pemberton, selling only nine drinks a day, the Coca-Cola Company has become one of the
most admired brand and best-known trademark in the world which now accounts for 1.7 billion
drinks a day which equates to about 19,400 beverages every second (Coca-Cola Company,
2011). Marketing management has played a key role and turning a sugary drink in Atlanta to a
global brand. It was first advertised as “Delicious and refreshing” in the 1980s and has
essentially chosen a new slogan every decade. In the 1930s it was “The best friend thirst ever
had.” Over the years the company has attached itself to movie stars, musical artists, sports and
their superstar athletes, and who could forget the Coca-Cola polar bears in the 1990s in an effort
to market. As the Globe has become more health conscious Coca-Cola kept pace and offered
varieties of its Coca-Cola Classic such as Coca-Cola Zero and Diet Coke. It also created and
formed companies out of the soda market such as Nestlé and Beverage Partners Worldwide,
which markets coffee and tea. 131 years and counting, they continue to be at the forefront of
mass marketing, trying to the appeal to the audience globally and more recently has become
heavily involved and going green by putting a massive effort in creating recyclable materials
through plant based materials.
