PROMPT 8 2
Prompt: Explain why the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 will fail to bring about
universal access, even if it prevails.
The main reason for creating the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 was to change and provide
healthcare for every American. The essentials of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 included
the following; It was a requirement that every American or businesses, by law or mandate, to have
an improved healthcare or else She/he would be penalized. Secondly, the act required a federal
system to either partially or completely pay for underinsured Americans, who are around thirty-
four million, to ensure that they have access to a more improved healthcare. This would be
achieved through subsidizing the underinsured Americans through the Medicaid or exchange. The
third essential was an extensive requirement on the health insurance industry. Several rules and
regulations in the field of medicine were also put into place. Despite the good intensions of the
Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010, it will fail to bring about a universal access even if it prevails.
It will be very difficult to insure all the underinsured American citizens. Some cannot afford to
have insurance schemes due to the status of their income. Even if the government decides to offer
subsidies, this would still be a challenge. This challenge will mostly be attributed by the ever-
increasing population in the United States. Due to this reason, profiteering will just prevail and
only high-income earners will be able to access such improved healthcare.
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 will also fail due to lack of funds. To fully implement
this program, the United Government has to fund this program through out its existence. This will
include paying for the subsidies and completely paying for those who cannot afford insurance the
at all. This means that, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 will directly depend on the
government and will automatically fail if these funds will not be available any more.
PROMPT 8 3
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 can only be realized if it is accompanied by side-rationing
which limits the use of specialty and expensive technology in the field of medicine. Ironically, the
Americans culture and beliefs involves the use of the most current and expensive technology in
the market. Due to this contradiction, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 will definitely fail.
Social classes are evident in America. It will not be possible to subject both the poor and the rich
to the same health programs. The rich will always be able to pay expensive insurance covers even
if it means getting treatment in the private sectors or even seeking medication abroad while the
poor remain underinsured. Bridging this gap will really be a hard task and with time the Affordable
Care Act (ACA) of 2010 will lose meaning and fail.
Since the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 was introduced it has severally been challenged in
the court regarding its constitutionality. Attempts to invalidate some of the key essentials of the
act are evident. Although as of July, 2013 these attempts to illegalize the Affordable Care Act
(ACA) of 2010 had not succeeded, this is a clear indication that not all Americans support this act
and a time will definitely come when they will be totally be against it.
Finally, the controversy of Medicaid expansion is another major reason why the Affordable Care
act will still fail even if it prevails. A significant number of the Americans have been against the
federal funding which is in a bid to expand the income of the low earners to enable them meet the
insurance programs. States fear that these extra costs could affect their budget.
