Statement of Topic
There are many ways in which one could define information. Information has many
different meanings depending on the application of thw word. There are also many different
information theory’s. “Bruce L. Blum developed his definition of information from an analysis
of the accomplishments in medical computing.44 In his analysis, he identified three types of
healthcare computing applications. Blum grouped applications according to the objects they
processed. The three types of objects he identified are data, information, and knowledge. Blum
defined data as uninterpreted elements such as a person’s name, weight, or age. Information was
defined as a collection of data that have been processed and then displayed as information, such
as weight over time. Knowledge results when data and information are identified and the
relationships between the data and information are formalized” (Nelson & Staggers, 2018,
pp.22).

This article dissects and studies the adoption and interpretation of patients abilities of
understanding and using the new forms of health information available to them through new
technological advancements. Patients are able to have questions answered through online
databases and send chats to members of these databases. It also has allowed for patient expertise

to become a prevalenet aspect of the online community which wasn’t available before. “The
emergence of social media technology has led to the creation of many online healthcare
communities, where patients can easily share and look for healthcare-related information from
peers who have experienced a similar problem” ( Jin, Yan, Li & Li, 2015). Health information
has become more available to patients through these online portals and communities.

This book goes into detail the numerous information systems available to the health care field.
There are many aspects that go into shaping this nations health information systems like
environmental factors. In addition, the ways that the information systems can be evaluated,
implemented, selected, and managed. The book also goes into the laws, regulations, and the
standards that affect the health care information systems. It is important that these systems are
regulated so that they aren’t compromised or used for illegal reasons. Then finally, the book
goes over issues with management of the information systems.

This book deals with the management of the health care information systems. The current state
of information systems in the United States. How health IT is evolving and reinventing care,
roles and connections. It also goes into looking forward to new initiatives that will make the
health care system better in many ways. In conclusion, the book discusses looking forward ti tge
year 2025. “The authors provide historical and contemporary views of technical, adaptive,
organizational and political aspects of “where we are and how we got here” with respect to
health IT” (Weaver, Ball, Kim & Kiel, 2015, pp. 2). These aspects are all important in order to
fully understand the health care information systems and what they might look like in the future.

Transforming Healthcare through Information Systems. With the ever evolving health care
profession it is hard to keep up with the increased costs and the increased life expectancy of
patients. This is becoming overwhelming for health care facilities and professionals. “The
development of information systems has paralleled technological developments and the
deployment of those technologies in all areas of society, including government, industry,
community, and in the home. ISD has always promoted a close interaction between theory and

Information systems have a lot of potential to decrease costs and improve care. Information
systems are used to store, capture, process, and communicate health care information.
“Information systems have great potential to reduce healthcare costs and improve outcomes. The
purpose of this special issue is to offer a forum for theory-driven research that explores the role
of Information Systems in the delivery of healthcare in its diverse organizational and regulatory
settings” (Koutsouris & Lazakidou, 2014, pp. v). These systems need and should be adapted
between all types of health care and health care facilities. The use of these systems improve the
quality of health care and the outcomes. They decrease costs and decrease the amount of visits.
