Selection, Implementation, and Delivery
A major obstacle to the global adoption, expansion, and progress of eHealth is the lack of
available healthcare workers trained in informatics and adequately prepared to work in
this growing field. What unique skill set(s) are needed to work in this evolving discipline?
What obstacles present themselves as informatics expands globally (e.g.,
education/language barriers, differences in terminology, legal issues, access to technology,
regulatory policies, etc.)? How might these challenges be overcome?
Health Care Informatics is a necessary discipline and requires many different skills
especially now that the industry is expanding and always changing. Individuals need to be able
to adapt to change and require the skills to be able to adapt to those changes. In countries around
the world provide critical care support to individuals who have acute illness and injuries that are
potentially reversible. These fields are some of the most cost-effective fields in the industry.
However, incomplete knowledge, and errors minimizes the impact worldwide. Innovations to
technology and new advancements has allowed the health care industry to produce efficient and
effective health care outcomes. Allowing the quality of care to increase while also improving
delivery and health care outcomes.
The first generation of information systems caused many problems like system overloads,
disrupting workflow, and causing an increase in false alarms. In addition to these hardships,
many medical staff with minimal computer literacy spent most of their time in front of the
computer and less time with their patients. Standardization, barriers, and integration was almost
impossible currently. With poor strategic planning and no international standardization costs
consumed government health budgets. Not all countries have the same accesses or are as
developed as others and require more policy. Identifying standard policy, network connectivity,
and access to the internet between countries will help break barriers globally. However, there are
still barriers in these areas between regions. Developed countries have access to early
implementation of information systems but underdeveloped countries do not which has held up

barriers for globalizing standard criteria. Some aspects that threaten the implementation of
health systems are income disparities, different types of costs, cultural differences, lack of
governmental policy, and resistance to computer use for health processes. Standardization of
policy will also play major role to interoperability of health systems. Legal policy and
government framework have also played a major role into how information systems are
implemented, and countries that do not have a good governmental backbone will run into many
barriers.
There are many skills that an individual should possess to use eHealth systems
productively and effectively. These include the following:
1. Interpersonal Skills
2. Ability to Problem Solve
3. Program Knowledge
4. Communication Skills
5. Ability to work with different eHealth systems
“Throughout the course of their professional lives, nurses interact with a variety of people, in a
variety of contexts and for a variety of reasons. During these social interactions they need to be
able to effectively communicate with and relate to other people. As such, nursing is a social
activity and nurses need to be socially competent. They must be skilled in the art of
interpersonal communication and human relationship building” (Stein-Parbury, 2009). Health
care staff must be able to communicate effectively with the people they work with as well as
their patients to properly do their jobs. They also must hold problem solving skills to break

down obstacles that they may face. Challenges can come from any direction within the health
care profession whether that be in their discipline or another’s. It also might be an eHealth type
challenge that the individual must solve to move on with a task. Therefore, problem-solving
skills are a must.
Program knowledge as well as ability to work with different eHealth systems is also a
must in the nursing atmosphere. This is also a form of eHealth literacy. “For hospital nurses, the
principal concept among the six core eHealth literacies will be health literacy, which is the ability
to obtain, understand and use health information to make appropriate decisions relating to
medical use (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2000)” (Cho, Han, & Park, 2018).
Medical staff must know how to properly use these programs to document effectively and make
the correct care decisions for their patients. Documenting data is one of the most important jobs
that medical staff has. Understanding the different programs, their functions, and how they work
is an absolute must in today’s world.
Producing a positive outcome for a patient is the most important result for a medical
provider. Hiring staff with the right set of skills is very important to be able to produce the best
possible outcomes. 1 Peter 4:10, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to
serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (Zondervan, 2011). God
has given us all kinds of gifts and talents that allows us to do great things. We should use these
talents to help others so that they may also continue to use their gifts. Medical staff have one of
the most important jobs in the world and that is to ensure the health and safety of the entire
world.
