Evidence Based practices has been around for years, which is how healthcare has evolved
by putting research to practice and improving the quality of care. “However, only in the last 70
years or so have research advances, such as the use of randomized controlled clinical trials to
demonstrate the safety and efficacy of healthcare services and technologies, made the widespread
adoption of research findings into practice possible at both the individual and institutional level”
(Hall, Roussel, 2017, p.283). Even though EBP has been around for years, it has recently picked
up with new avenues for testing with different Hierarchies and Ranking of Evidence.
There are many limitations and challenges to EBP. One has said that certain quantitative
methods only answer some of the public research questions. By only answering some of the
questions one doesn’t know if the intervention has worked as intended or has it been effective
because it may be lacking evidence or nonexistent. “Besides the characteristics of the evidence
or clinical practice guideline itself, the major barriers and facilitators seem to relate to the
individual mind-set, professional group norms, competencies in EBP, the balance between
confidence and critical reflection, and managerial collaboration” (Kaper, Swennen, van Wijk,
kalkman, van Rheenen, van der Graaf, van der Heijden, Geert, 2015, p.1262). The two most
frequently known barriers to EBP are lack of time and an organizational culture that didn't
support it. According to Jordan, Bowers and Morton (2016), “Barriers at the level of the
individual professional might include the individual’s attitude, perceptions, knowledge and
practices related to EBP” (p.50). For example, physicians rather base their clinical decisions on
tradition than what they have been taught in practice. Healthcare providers may present with a
heavy workload or lack of time to read literature. Just as- Psalm 119:105 your word is a lamp to
my feet and a light to my path. Taking time to read literature is the light and pathway into
evidence base practice. “Organizational barriers might include a lack of managerial support for

EBP implementation, resistance to change, unavailability of resources, and poor facilitation and
support for the implementation of EBP” (Jordan, Bowers, Morton, 2016, p.50).
