An organizational assessment is a systematic review of an organization's processes, work
environment, and organizational structure that will lead to a plan of actions to support
achievement of the objectives. To design an organizational assessment within a department, I
would look at shared governance, the culture of the organization and the safety of patient care
and ask a series of questions through a questionnaire/survey.
According to author Gordon (2016), “The shared governance model endorses a
partnership between nursing leaders and direct care staff that promotes collaboration, shared
decision making, and accountability for improving patient care and safety” (p.688) To establish
shared governance within an ultrasound department I would analyze the departments current or
pass problems. For example, team members may feel that they are being over worked and
understaffed. I would analyze current efficiency to see if times match exams. I would also take a
survey on how the employees are satisfied with the job. “It is believed that employee
participation and involvement in decision-making leads to improvements in productivity,
quality, and organizational performance” (Hall, 2017, p.167). To assess this area, I would see
how well the team works together to solve a departmental issue such as how to cover the years
holiday schedule.
Author Mohelska and Sokolova (2017), explain the culture of an organization as a “set
of values, standards, beliefs, attitudes and suppositions that, although has not explicitly been
formulated anywhere, determines how people behave and act, and how they perform their work”
(p.856). In looking at the culture of an organization I would first check for unity. Are there any
directional motives for a career path or growth within the department for a team leader, is there
room for improvement. I will implement a reward system that would motive employees to
further their education to move up. To assess this area, I would see how well the department

works together to solve an exam issue, for instance the doctor ordered an incorrect/improper
study. They will work as a team to see what they exam is supposed to be (upper extremity or
lower extremity) and is it will the correct department? The bible says in Romans 12:16 Live in
harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in
your own sight. This is a great example of unity among a team.
The safety of patient care will be assessing the proper function of day to day operation by
asking the employees, for example, what would you do if a patient what given a drug that they
told you they were allergic to? What is the correct protocol in handling this situation? Or what if
a patient has on an armband that isn’t theirs? What safety measures is the department taking
before each procedure? Such as a TIMEOUT and are they done correctly. Do new hires need
extra training on the equipment or procedures performed in the department. To assess this area, I
would observe patient and staff relationships. Are they checking armbands for names, allergies
and fall risk?
If all of these areas within the department are performing well, I expect to see unity, quality
work, efficiency, shared workload, good communication between nurses, doctors and
sonographers and completing goals at the end of the day.
