Once upon a time using a mixed method research design was frowned upon. As complex
research problems grew so did the need for using a mixed method design. When a mixed design
is used “The two analyses are conducted independent of each other and provide information
about the phenomenon through connecting, combining, or integrating the findings from the
QUAN analysis and from the QUAL analysis” (Hall, Roussell, p.62).
“The power of mixed methods research is its ability to deal with diversity and
divergence” (Schoonenboom, 2017, p.116). According to our textbook, “QUAL data are
quantitized or are converted into narrative categories that are assigned numbers” (Hall, Roussel,
p.62). Using a mixed method allows both QUAN and QUAL to build a great case upon each
other for us to understand easily. Authors Brundage, Smith, Little Bantug and Snyder (2015),
“mixed-methods study used a self-completed exercise followed by semi-structured qualitative
interviews to identify facilitators of and barriers to comprehension and application of current
PRO data presentation formats” (p.2458). This type of research is good when conducting how
on how to make an inform decision on the physician side and by monitoring individual patients
to inform care or treatment.
The cons of using a mixed method research design is that some scholars have a hard time
dealing with the trustworthiness of Qualitative research alone. “Pragmatists’ second perspective
of reality is that there is no one truth, but there are several explanations of reality” (Hall,
Roussell, p.48). Then some scholars are said that they use statements that best fit their value
system and this is defiantly a reason to have trust issues with mixing to the two.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for
reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent,
equipped for every good work. God tells us that when studying His word, we are to use multiple

tools. Not just one bible. To learn his word is to study and research as well. This is much like a
mixed method approach. We are not only to use the bible but other sources such as a dictionary,
commentary and bible software.
