In Module/Week 5, we cover Chapters 11–14, which deal with obtaining and
managing resources for the non-profit organization. Think of a non-profit organization
you are familiar with. If you are not familiar with one, please become familiar with
one in order to complete this assignment in a professional and informed manner. In
terms of the chapters we covered, what do you consider to be the 3 most important
concepts that the organization should consider? Include in your answer:
1. The concepts
2. Page numbers where the concepts may be located
3. A brief definition of the concepts
4. How the organization would benefit from considering the concepts you have chosen
5. How the application of the topic reflects God’s purpose or design
Your 500-word thread is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 5.
In Module/Week 6, you will post written responses to at least 2 students’ threads
from Module/Week 5. Responses should include a new topic that was not discussed
in the thread, including the page number of the concept, its benefit(s) to the
organization, and how the application of the topic reflects God’s purpose or design.
Your 250-word replies are due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 6.
For this thread, I will write about the nonprofit that I am heavily involved in, MARC. I
enjoyed these chapters, they cover what I am learning in other courses I am taking
now, as well. Thus, I am able to understand how everything gets tied together. The
concepts that I am choosing to write about are fund raising, page 267, sponsorship
on page 304 and lastly, operating reserves found on page 340.
Fund Raising is when an organization does an activity with the intent to gain
charitable or philanthropic donations (Worth, 2014). Fund Raising can be used to get
money or even items that your nonprofit can use. There are many ways to fund
raise, from auctions where the donors donate items that people can bid on and the
money raised goes to the charity. To even smaller fund raisers, like car washes or
bake sales. Sponsorship is when "the company pays for the use of its name or logo
in connection with the nonprofit’s products or events" (Worth, 2014). We have all
seen this in action. They can be found on T-Shirts at charity runs or part of the
company’s mission. Lastly there is operating reserves. This is, in basic terms, a rainy
day fund. It usually accounts for 6-12 months of the nonprofits operating budget and
acts in the same way as would your personal savings account.
MARC can benefit from fund raising because we are helping children become
successful in the real world. This means that they are attending job interviews and
learning skills. If we can raise money to be able to take them shopping and buy them
proper business attire to wear to a job interview, it helps our cause even more. As of
right now, MARC is teamed up with other nonprofits but I believe that they could
excel by having a sponsorship from an organization. Since all the volunteers are
Marines, it would be awesome to gain a sponsorship from the Marine Corps
Community Services (MCCS). Not only could this help with funds and awareness,
the MCCS could help by allowing for us to show these children what a company is
and how it is structured. It can help them understand the fundamentals of business
which can in turn, help them understand the reasoning behind the things that we
mentor them on. Next, there is operating reserves. MARC is a fairly new nonprofit,
yet we need to ensure that these kids are our priority. By having and maintaining an
operating reserve, we can help these kids more with the understanding that we are
covered in the event of a shortage of funds or any emergency. With the entire focus
on the children, we can be better mentors and be able to focus on finding more
volunteers and more kids to help!
Overall, this thread is about funds and the children. Consider Matthew 6:31-32,
"Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’
or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your
heavenly Father knows that you need them all" (ESV). While we should go for fund
raisers and get sponsors and have that operating reserves, it is important to
remember that above all we must have faith. We must remember that by putting faith
in God, we will have everything we need and He will supply all our needs. We must
work hard for the Lord and to help these Children, who are made in His image! If we
can do this, we can help change these children's lives.

Three unique concepts directly related to any nonprofit organization during start-up planning
are related to its revenue and capital required to support their operations and mission goals.
These include initiating a2case for support, development of a2business plan, and the option of
seeking government support through agrant.2
To meet goals for the future operations, planning specific fund-raising objectives is critical.
In order to do this the organization must develop a2case for support. “The case for support is
the reason the organization seeks support, derived from its mission and values and answers
several questions donors might ask” (Worth, p.273, 2014). These questions may include,
“why should I give to this organization?” or “why is this more important than others who
seek support or donations?”.2 The method and verbiage used to solicit the support is very
important. Often larger corporations that have internal programs to support nonprofits have to
decide who or why they prefer to support a particular organization. Close attention should be
given to how the case can motivate or influence donors.
Like most businesses that are beginning, developing a2business plan2is required to identify
the entire who, what, and how of the new business adventure. “A business plan is a detailed,
comprehensive document, which encompasses the elements of strategic, marketing, business,
and operation plans” (Worth, p. 311). 2These plans involve a lot of work and can be very time
consuming to produce. They are considered as an internal tool to help guide the development
of the business and can be used as a document to enlist potential donors or investors. When
developing a business plan, the right questions should be addressed. The ideas need to be
reviewed so that they have a significant value to those they will support (Harris, 2005). There
needs to be a good fit to the originating ideas when execution or start-up meets the goals of
the plan.
Sometimes, depending on the function and mission of a particular nonprofit organization they
may seek to receive needed financial aid support by qualifying for a2grant. “A grant is an
award of money made by the government or a private funder with the hope that a public
purpose will be achieved” (Worth, p. 325). Grants are normally provided for short term
projects such as research. Normally, the use of funds for grants require the money to be spent
for a designated purpose and if it cannot achieve the desired results, future grants may not be
provided. As mentioned, Grants are normally issued to research and development initiatives.
Particular procedures are required when seeking a grant. When applying for a grant, the
application must be persuasive and can be considered the most challenging aspect of the
entire grant process (Staines, 2010).
There are dozens of new grants issued to nonprofits that are tracked every day.
Grantwatch.com posts new grants for nonprofits and small businesses.2 Fellowships for USA,
Canada & International PhDs to Conduct Humanities or Social Science Research is one of the
nonprofits listed. Most any new nonprofit will utilize these concepts mentioned to develop
their funding plan through their case for support and marketing plan, development of a
business plan to determine how they will function and operate, or seeking government
assistance through a grant to fund their programs. These concepts are generally used with
most organizations during their early stages prior to execution.
Most Christians have probably used these concepts to develop a personal plan of how they
intend to be obedient in their faith and worship2God and Christ the Savior.2 How many times
have we heard our minister preach to us, or remind us that we need to develop a “business
plan” to follow the wills of God. This is normally a contract we self-develop to determine
how we are going to follow God’s commands and ask Him to be part of our life. Just as a
business would seek support we need to ask the same from God, otherwise He doesn’t know
us. God grants us so many good things2in our lives, unconditionally,2and not on just a limited
basis.

Best Friends Animal Society is a nonprofit organization that works diligently to save
animals from being euthanized in animal shelters and is working to “provide a better world
through kindness to animals” and their goal is “to bring about a time when there are no more
homeless pets (BFAS, 2013). The organization helps about 1,700 animals at a time on their
property which about 3,700 acres and is the largest no-kill sanctuary in the United States,
providing areas for animals such as pigs, birds, dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, and more (BFAS,
2012). The three concepts I chose for this organization is fund-raising, partnership, and risk
management.
22222222222 According to Worth, “fund-raising is an activity undertaken with the goal of eliciting
charitable or philanthropic giving” (2014, p. 267). Fund-raising is a great way for a nonprofit
to reach any goals they may have. On the Best Friends Animal Society webpage, anyone is
able to start a fundraiser for the organization; the donations go towards the animals at the
sanctuary and will also help support pet adoption, spaying and neutering, advocacy programs
and more (BFAS, 2013). Fund-raising can go a long way for organizations, especially smaller
ones no matter what the cause. Raising enough funds by donors to fulfill the organization’s
goals can make a huge difference in the community.
22222222222 A partnership “advances the goals of both parties, an arrangement in which both sides
receive specific benefits related to their goals (Worth, 2014, p. 303). Having a nonprofit-
corporate partnership can make a big impact for an organization like Best Friends Animal
Society. Best Friends corporate partners such as PetSmart Charities, Overstock.com, Best
Western, Mini USA, etc. benefit the organization by providing long-term funding to support
their sanctuary (BFAS, 2013). Other than fund-raising, having a partnership can also help
nonprofits reach their goals.
22222222222 Lastly, risk management is another important concept for Best Friends Animal
Society. According to our textbook “risk management requires identifying scenarios that
could negatively impact the organization then devising policies and controls to either prevent
those events from occurring or to provide financial protection to the organization if one does
occur” (Worth, 2014, p. 355). Best Friends Animal Society does seem to be doing a great job
at managing the risks and eliminating the likeliness of those risks to occur. Having the
animals separated into their own area such as the dogs in one area and cats in another,
prevents any mishaps that may happen between animals and cause one to get hurt or worse.
Best Friends also spays and vaccinates stray animals, lowering the risk of those animals
becoming even more overpopulated or sick because they do not have vaccines; which could
cause more animals to be sick if the strays came into contact with them. After the
organization vaccinates and spays/neuters them, they return the animals back to where they
came from (Wiren, 2014).
22222222222 The overpopulation of animals is a major problem in our society which results to
numerous animals being sent to shelters or becoming strays. The Best Friends Animal
Society is doing everything they can to lower the numbers of how many animals are
euthanized and trying to find stray animals a place they can call home. This organization has
been so successful in what they do that in 2013 alone, “more than 160,000 animals were
helped by Best Friends programs” (BFAS, 2014). Acts 20:35 states, “In everything I did, I
showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words
the Lord Jesus himself said:2‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’2”2(NIV). If the
majority of people in the country could help save these helpless animals it would
make a tremendous difference and dramatically decrease the number of animals
being euthanized.

A non-profit is defined as a group organized for purposes other than earning profits
and none part of whose income is distributed among the members, directors or officers.2
Often,2they are also termed as the non-stock corporations. There are a large number of non-
profits operating in the US in areas as diverse as health, education,2and human services.
Unlike the for profit organizations, the non-profits mainly operate for the purpose of public
welfare. Some of the important names among these are Metropolitan Museum of
Art,2National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Wildlife Conservation Society,
andetc. The2textbook2includes a number of concepts that are important for the non-profit
organizations.
The non-profits enjoy considerable autonomy and are also exempt from taxation.
However, since they operate to a large extent on public’s money, they are also accountable to
the society. Chapter 6 highlights some important mechanisms required to maintain
accountability in the non-profit organizations. There are three mechanisms principally that
the book highlights – rule of law, self-regulation and transparency. Sarbanes Oxley, state
laws,2and IRS regulations are important to be considered in this regard. 2In terms of self-
regulation,2ethical practices and good governance are essential. There are a number of
watchdog agencies which act to ensure transparency on the non-profit organizations (Worth,
2014,2p.2128-129). Hebrews 4:13 (English Standard Version)also emphasizes the importance
of accountability, “And no creature is hidden from2his sight, but all are naked and exposed to
the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”Everyone is accountable to Him and has to
act responsibly. Especially, those who are on the God’s path have to be transparent in their
practices.
Strategic planning is also an important concept for the non-profits. SWOT analysis is
an important tool for strategic planning that comes in handy for the non-profits in terms of
formulating strategy for the organization. The main aim of a SWOT analysis is to identify
one’s business environment, to know his strengths and weaknesses as well as to identify the
opportunities and threats that are there in the external environment. A part of the SWOT
analysis also includes assessing the position of the other organizations in competition.2 The
environmental scan can be used to identify strategic issues and formulate a strategy
accordingly (Worth, 2014,2p.2166-168). As2Proverbs 21:52says about strategy and planning,
“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to
poverty.” People who plan ahead are able to reach their goal and for the non-profits
especially that are serving the humanity it is very important.
Staff management is also important for the non-profits just like any other
organization. Non-profits operate with paid staff as well as volunteers. It is important to
manage both for getting the best results. In fact,2a large number of non-profits operate with
the help of volunteers only. However, an important factor to be understood for managing the
staff whether paid staff or a volunteer is to understand their motivations. Unless the staffs are
motivated,2they would not be able to give the organization their full contribution. So, keeping
the staff motivated is very important for any organization including the non-profits (Worth,
2014,2p.2212). Motivation is an important force andMatthew 19:26 (English Standard
Version)2also stresses on its importance, “But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this
is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” After all, motivation is the force which
keeps people directed on the path of good.
