Running head: TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERSHIP

Transformative Leadership
The successive election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States
shows that he is indeed a transformational leader. His transformative nature was also evident
when he was in the U.S. Senate where his influence led to the change of perception towards
the black people. The achievements of president Obama enable him to inspire people to
achieve their dreams (Bennis, 2008). Given his background, he was fatherless, African
America, Obama overcame all obstacles and rose to become the present of the United States
of America. Some of the traits that made him stand out a good leader include having
confidence and assuring people that is possible to have a black as the American president,
and this is even though many people did not believe that this was possible (Bertocci, 2009).
This was evident in his campaigns; he was calm when giving speeches and affirmed the
audience that could bring change to America.
Besides, he was open to ideas and constructive criticism a factor that gave him an
edge over his fierce competitor John McCain. By assuring his supporters that there is a
possibility of changing personal histories and the lives, Obama creates a spirit that inspired
and motivated people (Howatt, 2007; Satterlee, 2013). Owing to the fact diverse groups have
different needs I will try to strike a balance when communicating in that I am not seen to be
presenting then needs of one group while not addressing the needs of other groups. For
instance, if I am addressing the African Americans and the Native Americans I will try to
pass a message that seeks to demystify the cultural barriers that exist between the two groups.
Unlike president Barrack Obama’s communication strategy that sought to assure followers
that they could change their destiny, I will be more sensitive because some supports have
different needs.
