Question 1
1. Matthew 22:36-40 states, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus
replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all
your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your
neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
What would be the implications for nations to follow the above, when considering tariffs,
quotas, and embargoes? Write a short essay for each consideration.
After looking at what it says in Matthew 22: 36-40, I think that for nations to follow what
is outlined in this verse they need to make sure that whatever trade agreement that is made with
other countries positively benefits both parties in some way, otherwise it will not work. It is very
much difficult for different countries to be completely aligned with another when it comes to
culture, customs, morals, and beliefs. However, despite these differences it is not impossible to
come to some form of agreement through the use of tariffs, quotas, and embargoes. These
different tactics provide boundaries as to what can and cannot be allowed when conducting trade.
It is important that countries treat each other fairly in trade, just as they would have wanted to be
treated like it says in Matthew 22.
I think that in the utilization of tariffs, quotas, and embargoes allows countries to protect
their resources and citizens from the bad intentions of individuals withing the nations they are
trading with. It also allows for there to not a be a complete reliance on another country for a
specific resource, but rather a benefit from the value that comes from the products of these
agreements.
