Is there a parallel between this parable and how we earn money and consume today?
Yes, I believe there is a parallel. Not only is there a parallel, I believe that we are living in the reality of
this parable. While this parable has an end, our stories are still being written and we are still waiting for our
Nobleman to return. The outcome of our stories are based on the grace and gift that our Master has given us
(Cowan, 2006). It seems apparent that the gift is accepted through our obedience to God’s
will – in other words, the gift is what saves us, our obedience shows our acceptance.
Grace is an unlimited resource that can be the fuel to our obedience. I believe the
parallel is especially clear in that we are to offer our talents to accomplish the greater
good for our world. Consumption of anything should be viewed as a resource to drive us
and our world into a better place – which I believe involves a deeper relationship with
Christ. This parable rebukes laziness, disobedience, sin of omission - the opportunity cost
of hiding the money instead of trying to accomplish something with it.
How do you understand the relationship between faith and good works?
James 2:14-16 says, “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has
no deeds? Can such faith save them?...In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is
dead.” First off, I must say that I believe our salvation comes from the Messiah who is Jesus Christ – no other
person or process can save. However, just because I know that clean water comes from the faucet does not mean
that it will quench my thirst. There must be action taken in order to confirm that a thought moves to a belief – a
faith. Therefore, the relationship between faith and good words (action) is a physical acceptance. I physically
accept the fact that the water from the faucet will quench my thirst when I move towards it, turn it on, and take a
drink. This action confirms my belief just as our good works can confirms our faith. Good works
cannotAcreateAour faith, justAconfirmAit. In the same way our faith is only a thought (“dead”) when no action is
taken.

Is there a parallel between this parable and how we earn money and consume today?
AAAAAAAAAAA With regards to this parable there is certainly a clear parallel between the
circumstance surrounding the servants who were entrusted with assets and the way we spend
money today. Every aspect of our life is a gift that we are responsible to use with the best
degree of stewardship possible.
Life is constituted of a multitude of choices. Choices to be wise, to love those around
us well, manage priorities, and live with biblical principles. In many regards our life is a test
in which to ‘pass’ we are to bring honor to our Lord. This is not to say that in making poor
decisions we are to lose our holy inheritance in Christ, but rather that in making good
decisions we become increasingly refined to the likeness of our Savior and bring glory to the
Lord. An example of where we can see life as a test plainly is in the life of Job in which God
decided to test his righteousness by taking everything from him. At the end of this test that is
our lifetime I hope to hear, as the wise servants did, “well done my good and faithful
servant”.

We hear a lot about work/life balance. What would you say about a work/faith balance?
AAAAAAAAAAA Work life balance theoretically makes a lot of sense because it essentially promotes
the notion of managing priorities well. In managing multiple priorities it is important to
remember that there are some priorities, such as home life, that are deeply important and can
easily be thrown by the wayside. This notion, however, does not make sense in the context of
work and faith. Faith is to be integrated into the core of our identities, spilling over into every
area of our life constantly. Work/life balance makes sense because the two are clearly
separated. Work/faith does not because the two are not to be separated. Faith is to be found in
everything we do.
Is there a parallel between this parable and how we earn money and consume today?
AAAAAAAAAAA There is a parallel between this parable and how we earn money and consume today.A
In the parable, the king entrusted three servants with an equal amount of money, and told
them to put the money to work.A In the parable, two out of three servants invested the money.A
At the kings return, the two servants presented the king with his principal plus the profit they
made in his absence.A In our lives, there are people that believe that the money they earn is
their own; but, in reality, the money we earn comes from God.A Knowing that we must
survive and take care of our family, God granted us the jobs we have, plus the skills it takes
to do these jobs.A As in the parable, God wants us to invest our earnings and not just let hoard
them away.A
AAAAAAAAAAA I take this parable a little more philosophical than most people.A I do believe that God
wants us to spend our money wisely.A I also believe that can be seen from a different angle as
well.A For instance, if I came home today to find a unexpected check for five hundred dollars
in the mail, how would I invest this windfall usually?A I would see this as an unexpected gift
and think of some way that I could share this with my family members so that we can all
enjoy it.A I might pick a trip to the beach for a couple of days, or something else that we can
all do together.A I do not see the term “invest wisely” to only mean turning a financial profit.A
I see it as a broader term.A Spending time and creating memories with my family is a much
better investment to me than buying myself some article that will eventually lose its value.
We hear a lot about work/life balance.* What would you say about a work/faith
balance?
AAAAAAAAAAA My faith is a part of who I am.A This faith is with me even in my workplace.A I am the
same person at home as I am at work.A For instance, there are always people that work with
me who are very ambitious and want to move up in their career.A Some of these same people
will do almost anything to make it to that next level.A I do not share this way of thinking.A I
believe that one must let their faith shine through their work ethic.A It is discouraging to see
such people move ahead of me.A
I have faith that I am where God wants me to be right now.A It may be that I am to be
part of His plan to help someone else; or, it may be that there is something He wants me to
learn in my current position.A Either way, I try not to second think myself and my career.A I
try my best to thank God each day for the job I have, the people I have around me, and the
unknown path He has waiting for my future.
Is debt always a bad thing?* Can it be a tool if we use it wisely?
Romans 13:7 (2014) tells us to, “Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are
owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom
honor is owed” (The King).A Therefore, having debt is not always a bad thing; however, we
must make sure we pay that debt back.A One must use and create debt responsibly.A For
example, do not go and get a credit card just because you qualify for it.A Or, if you do decide
to get a credit card, don’t spend all the way to the maximum amount just because it is
available.A I learned during my home buying process that having debt can be beneficial if
used wisely.A You can use credit cards as a tool to help boost your credit score.A I had three
credit cards that was on my credit report.A Two of them had no balance, and one did.A My loan
officer told me to charge at least $10 to my two cards with no balance and to pay my other
down to only $20.A She told me to do that because it would help my credit score, and it did.A
So, that is an example of how you can use your debt as a tool so that it can become beneficial
to you.
Why do you think people get into debt?* Should others help them?* How can they help
themselves?
People get into debt for many reasons.A Most people that I know that are in debt got there
because they are just irresponsible and try to live beyond their means.A I have tried to share
the things that I know about credit and tried helping by giving them my loan officer’s phone
number so she can tell them exactly what to do to get their credit at a place to where they can
begin the home buying process.A However, I’ve learned that you can’t help someone until
they want to help themselves.A An individual can’t help their self until they take responsibility
for the mistakes they have made, and commit to correcting those mistakes.A Until then, they
will just continue to diminish in their pool of mistakes.

How do you understand the relationship between faith and good
works?
When it comes to the topic of the relationship between faith and good
works, I believe the best source to turn to is the Bible. In James 2:14-26,
he talks about how faith and good works must work together. A person
cannot have faith, and have no works to back up their faith because then
their faith is useless. However, it is the same case for good works without
faith because what good is your actions if you have no faith in a God that
saves. In James 2:17 is says, "faith by itself, if not accompanied by action,
is dead". It is not unusual/to see people who think that because they have
one, either faith or works, that they automatically have the other;
however, Jesus is an example of a man with faith that through His works
he was able to save His creation. Once people accept Jesus as their savior,
their faith begins to grow stronger and stronger, and it is through their
actions that their faith should be demonstrated. People's everyday actions
should reflect/their faith and/that they are followers of Christ./
We hear a lot about a work/life balance. What would you say
about a work/life balance?
Work is one of those things in life that are necessary to survive. People
need money in order/to be able to provide for the basic needs of their
families; however, the problem comes along when people become
obsessed with working. While it is a good thing to like to work and make
money, it starts to become negative when there is no work/life balance in
a person's life. The best way to avoid letting work take over your life is by
prioritizing the things that you and your family need versus the things you
want. You should work only to the point that you can comfortably live and
still be able to share and enjoy time with family, friends, God and even
yourself. By finding a balance between work and life, you are able to live a
happier life by still being able to provide for your family./
