Annotated Bibliography
“ Respect, compassion, and recognition of human dignity are pivotal in shaping the healthcare
experiences of people experiencing homelessness and are fundamental to patient satisfaction
(Miller et al., 2024).” The urgency of addressing health disparities among the homeless cannot
be overstated. The ever-changing nature of homelessness, combined with limited access to
consistent medical care, exacerbates existing health issues and gives rise to new ones. This
annotated bibliography brings together crucial research studies, policy analyses, and program
evaluations that shed light on the intricate health needs of the homeless. This comprehensive
review of these resources aims to foster positive change and improve healthcare outcomes for the
homeless, a need that cannot wait.
Lee,J.J.,Jagasia, E., Wilson, P.R. (2023). Addressing health disparities of individuals
experiencing homelessness in the U.S. with community institutional partnerships:
An integrative review. (“Addressing health disparities of individuals experiencing
homelessness ...”) Journal of Advanced Nursing.79, 1678-1690.
https://doi.org/10.1111/jan.15591
The Journal of Advanced Nursing article offers a comprehensive review of community-
institutional partnerships in the U.S., specifically focusing on addressing health disparities
among the homeless population. The review delves into the collaborative efforts between
academic institutions, hospitals, and community organizations to deliver healthcare services and
examines the social determinants of health, which are the conditions in which people are born,
grow, live, work, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily
life. It encompasses seventeen articles available, from preventive care to specialized treatments.

The findings underscore the importance of further research to assess the effectiveness of these
partnerships and their impact on the health of homeless individuals. Additionally, the review
pinpoints areas for future exploration and stresses the significance of addressing social
determinants of health to enhance access to care for vulnerable groups.
Miller, J., Hutton, J., Dohert, C., Vallesi, S., Currie, J., Rushworth, K., Larkin, M., Scott,
M., Morrow, J., & Wood, L. (2024). A Scoping review examining patient experience
and what matters to people experiencing homelessness when seeking healthcare
Health Services Research,24,1-38. https:/doi, org/10.1186/s12913-024-10971-8
In this research, Miller goes into an in-depth study of thirty-two papers from the USA, UK,
Australia, and Canada, providing insights into the healthcare priorities of people experiencing
homelessness (PEH). It highlights the crucial need for accessible, timely, and person-centered
care that prioritizes dignity, respect, and compassion. Person-centered care, in the context of
homeless healthcare, means tailoring healthcare services to the unique needs and circumstances
of everyone, taking into account their experiences of homelessness and the social determinants of
health that affect them. However, it also highlights that current surveys do not fully capture
safety, fairness, and effectiveness. While the Primary Care Quality-Homeless questionnaire
closely aligns with the priorities of PEH, there are still gaps, particularly in addressing safety and
holistic care. The review emphasizes the importance of actively involving PEH in the design of
trauma-informed and culturally safe healthcare services, ensuring equitable and comprehensive
care delivery. It also underscores the necessity of improving patient experience surveys to better
reflect the unique needs of PEH and to guide enhancements in homeless healthcare services.

Olson and Anderson-Shaw (2023) highlight the urgent ethical implications of health disparities
among the homeless, underscoring the critical role of nurses in advocating for human rights and
reducing health inequalities as outlined in the ANA Code of Ethics. Through the compelling case
of Mr. Joseph, the authors vividly illustrate the immense challenges homeless individuals face in
accessing healthcare and the moral distress experienced by healthcare professionals. They
passionately advocate for implementing safe discharge practices, improved access to resources,
and immediate legislative action to address the social determinants of health. The article
powerfully emphasizes the vital importance of partnerships, such as the Better Health Through
Housing program, in significantly improving healthcare access and outcomes for the homeless
population and the unique role of nurses in this process.

In his dissertation, Michael C. Pearson emphasizes the crucial role of relational care approaches
in enhancing the health and well-being of homeless individuals. He advocates for service
providers to establish solid and empathetic relationships with clients, addressing both individual
and systemic issues related to homelessness. Pearson's work aligns with the biblical principle of
loving one's neighbor (Mark 12:31), as it calls for a compassionate, person-centered approach to
care that reflects Christ's love for the marginalized. His research underscores the need for
professional attitudes and skills in service delivery, echoing the call to serve others with humility
and grace (Philippians 2:3-4). This approach is not just practical but also essential in the context
of homelessness.

G. (2024). Creating space for adolescents and families with lived experience of
homelessness to build familial empathy, communication, and emotional regulation:
A Qualitative Study of Facilitators of Implementation. Journal of Psychosocial
Nursing and Mental Health Services, 62(1), 27–35. https://doi.org/10.3928/02793695-

The study featured in the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing & Mental Health Services delves into
a program specifically designed to nurture empathy, communication, and emotional regulation
among adolescents and families who have experienced homelessness. The qualitative research
underscores the significance of creating a nurturing space where family members can develop
these skills, which are instrumental in fortifying familial connections and enhancing overall
mental well-being. The program's facilitators are pivotal in guiding participants through this
process, ensuring that the unique challenges faced by homeless families are approached with

sensitivity and understanding. This initiative seeks to empower individuals and contributes to the
broader aim of alleviating the psychosocial impacts of homelessness.
